Police and parents swarm the campus of Price Middle School after a shooting on campus. An Atlanta Fire & Rescue spokesperson says that a 14-year-old was shot in the head and was taken to Grady Hospital for treatment. The student was alert and conscious when transported to the hospital. A teacher also reportedly suffered minor injuries in the chaos that ensued after the shooting as everyone ran. Atlanta Police spokesman Carlos Campos said a suspect, tentatively identified as another student, is in custody. No motive is known. The shooting happened outside the school on Benjamin Bickers Drive, which is north of Lakewood. Police recovered a handgun that was on the ground, released the magazine, and bagged it as evidence. The Atlanta Public Schools Twitter feed also adds that "Price, Carver and Slater are all on lockdown." Dozens of panicked parents gathered near the school entrance, anxious for Price Middle School officials to release their children. But APS decided to keep the children inside and release them later, apparently to make sure they could account for each child's safety.
The former security guard on trial for the shootings of three women in a midtown parking deck in July 2011 confesses he did it--in a sort of out-of-body experience that he watched but was unable to control. Now, Nkosi Thandiwe's lawyer wants him to get a psychiatric evaluation to see if he could be found not guilty by reason of insanity. But not before the prosecutor picked up on something else he said, asking him whether he was "trying to spread the message of making white people the enemy?" "Yes," Thandiwe replied. The prosecution says it is too late for Thandiwe's team to try to raise an insanity defense now. One woman was killed, one survivor is paralyzed.
George Zimmerman's lawyers want more time to prepare their defense to the second-degree murder of Trayvon Martin. They're asking a judge to push back the trial from June to November. The former neighborhood watch volunteer is pleading not guilty after shooting the unarmed teen to death last March in Sanford, Florida, and claiming self-defense. Zimmerman's lawyers are also making another online pitch for people to donate money.
The White House says President Barack Obama and the first lady's prayers are with the family of a 15-year-old girl Chicago girl killed by a stray bullet. Hadiya Pendleton was shot in the back while talking with friends. The honor student had performed as a majorette with a prep school band that took part in the president's inauguration festivities.
Alabama law enforcement officials say negotiations are ongoing with a gunman who has been holed up with a boy taken off a school bus Tuesday afternoon. SWAT teams have surrounded an underground bunker in Midland City. The suspect killed a bus driver and fled with the five-year-old.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank may now be willing to pony up as much as $800 million to fund a new billion-dollar retractable roof stadium downtown. The other $200 million would come from bonds issued by Atlanta, not the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, so they wouldn't need state lawmakers' approval.
President Barack Obama's pick for defense secretary appears before the Senate Armed Services Committee today. Former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel faces GOP critics who say he's not sufficiently pro-Israel or tough enough on Iran.
Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will not get a new trial. On Wednesday, a judge rejected his argument that his lawyers were not given enough time to prepare their defense in his case.
The alleged mastermind of the Manti Te'o love hoax confesses that he loves Te'o. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo tells Dr. Phil in a two-part interview airing today and tomorrow that Te'o had no part in the scheme, and that he created the fictional girlfriend alone. He claims he posed as Lennay Kekua online and on the phone--and actually fell in love with Te'o himself. Tuiasosopo says he is trying to "recover from homosexuality" and get his real life back. Te'o was asked by Katie Couric earlier this month whether he is gay, and he replied, "Far from it."
