President Obama urges Congress to "act soon" on a range of proposals to tighten gun controls with a $500 million package of executive orders he signed and legislative proposals lawmakers must approve. At the White House Wednesday, he said 900 Americans had lost their lives by gunfire in the four weeks since the school shootings in Connecticut, noting, "We can't put this off any longer."
Ten-year-old Taejah Goode of Douglasville witnessed it all in person, after writing the president to urge him to stop gun violence.
"You never know when somebody's going to strike with a gun," said Goode. "People can really be killed, so I wanted to write a letter to make, like, a rule to stop it."
Goode also met the parents of a girl who died last month at Sandy Hook Elementary. He said when he saw her mom crying, "I wanted to go up and hug her."
The president is calling for background checks on all gun sales and a ban on both military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as part of a plan to curb gun violence.
Georgia's unemployment rate ticks up a tenth to 8.6% last month. The labor commissioner says even so, it's the best November-to-December jobs report in five years, as the state added 70,000 jobs from December 2011's numbers.
DeKalb County school board members appear at a hearing before the state school board today, with the future of the district at stake. SACS placed the system on probation last month. Under a recently new law, the state board can suspend members of a local school board that has been placed on probation, and appoint temporary replacements.
Clayton County Police take the lead on a triple-murder probe. Sgt. K. T. Hughes says the victims found Sunday in a car running on an exit ramp off Flat Shoals Road were actually killed at a house on Magnolia Drive in Jonesboro. The Union City police officer who saw the car discovered two men dead of asphyxiation in the back seat, and a woman who had been strangled in the trunk.
Civil rights advocates say tough disciplinary practices at Mississippi schools are causing children to be expelled and even incarcerated for minor infractions -- and that the policies disproportionally affect minorities. The Justice Department already has filed a suit, claiming officials in Meridian are running a "school-to-prison pipeline" for minor infractions. The ACLU and NAACP contend that the problem has plagued the entire state for years.
A U. S.-based computer software developer apparently outsourced his own job to China--while he surfed the web and watched cat videos all day. His employer figured it out by monitoring its VPN, or virtual private network connections, after seeing mysterious system log-ons from China and investigating. The culprit was paying a third party in China to do his work for a fraction of his salary.
An accused tax cheat continues his crimes behind state prison bars. Thirty-four-year-old Arnold Gervais of Marietta pleaded guilty to claiming false wages and withholding from a phony company he set up in Rome, called Safety Shoes Plus. Federal prosecutors say he raked in $2.8 million. The IRS recovered almost all of it. Gervais was in prison for trying to steal state tax refunds.
In KISS news about your health: The FDA approves a new flu vaccine. Flu-block is grown in caterpillars, not eggs, meaning people who have egg allergies can take it. Meanwhile, a new study reassures pregnant women that the flu is safe for them. It found no evidence the vaccine increases the risk of losing a fetus, and may even prevent some fetal deaths.
Police continue looking for the driver who sideswiped a school bus Wednesday afternoon in northwest Atlanta--and kept going. One student says the whole bus shook, and she thought it would fall over when the truck hit it. Police say they are searching for a white pickup truck with a silver tool box.
The KISS 104 weather forecast: chilly rain showers, and falling temperatures Thursday. The day's highs will stay above freezing. Lows overnight, 26-31. This evening, there will be a chance of a wintry mix. Friday, sunny high of 53.
