Victor Hill is back as Clayton County's new sheriff, despite having several charges against him. The man, who calls himself the "crime-fighter", officially became sheriff again as of midnight Monday.  Hill first became sheriff in 2004, but lost re-election in 2008. Hill currently has 32 felony charges pending against him and whether he continues in office while his racketeering and theft charges are unresolved is still uncertain. Governor Nathan Deal has the power to suspended Hill while he remains under indictment.

As kids start a new year, an anti-bullying rally is in the works. The rally, hosted by the Fulton County Youth Commission, will be held on January 15th from 5:30p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta. Organizers say the rally is to help combat the latest numbers that show 20-percent of high school students reported having been bullied at school, and 16-percent reported being targets of online bullying. Registration for the rally is free.

As of New Years Day buying items online is no longer tax free. In an attempt to collect state and local sales taxes from online retailers, Georgia has a new law for stores that do not have a warehouse or store in the state, but use ads on Georgia-based websites as a gateway to their own sites. If you purchase items from retailers who do not already pay Georgia sales tax such as Amazon.com, taxes will be applied.  Some retailers such as Overstock.com say the new law will hurt its business.

Congress was able to hold off the "fiscal cliff" but most Americans will still have to pay more in taxes. The reason for the tax increase is because as of January 1st taxes on Social Security went up. Those who earn $50,000 a year will pay $1,000 more in taxes. The budget deal Congress passed did not address the social security issue.

The so-called "baby boom" is over. New data shows the U.S. population is growing at its slowest pace since the Great Depression.  The Census Bureau estimates the nation's population is just over 315-million. The data compiled by Bloomberg News, shows the population is on a pace to grow by seven-point-three percent in this decade, which would be the lowest level since the 1930s.


Nearly two thirds of adults set fitness goals for the New Year that many usually don't keep.  A new survey shows 73-percent of those who set fitness goals end up abandoning them within six weeks or less.  More than 40-percent say their biggest obstacles include not being able to devote themselves to a diet or workout regimen.
