Hours before a meeting which could lead to their removals, the DeKalb County School Board is filing suit challenging the governor's ability to kick them out of office. The lawsuit seeks to stop Thursday's hearing before the state Board of Education, and says the law permitting the governor to remove elected school board officials in a troubled district is unconstitutional. The hearing comes after the DeKalb School System was placed on probation by the SACS accrediting agency last year. A Dunwoody state lawmaker is angry over the board's move. Republican State Rep. Fran Millar calls it "selfish." This morning, a judge in Fulton County denied the board's request for temporary restraining order, so the meeting will go on as scheduled.
Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., holding back tears, entered a guilty plea today in federal court to criminal charges that he misused $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. He faces 46 to 57 months in prison under a plea deal with prosecutors on the conspiracy charge. His wife, Sandi, will also plead guilty to a tax charge of filing false income tax returns. Prosecutors say the couple spent the money on things including a Rolex, kids' furniture, and furs.
Atlanta Police search for the hit & run driver who killed a woman Tuesday morning on MLK. Cassandra Head, 53, was in a crosswalk when she was run down by a dark-colored SUV. She is survived by five children and 16 grandkids.
A federal appeals court has halted the execution of a Georgia man who killed a fellow inmate in 1990. Warren Lee Hill's lawyers now have 30 days to make their case that he's retarded and shouldn't be put to death. Hills IQ is 70, and his attorneys say he is mentally disabled and that executing him violates state law and a 2002 U. S. Supreme Court decision. At the time of the inmate's murder, Hill was already serving a life sentence for murder in the 1986 slaying of his girlfriend.
The White House is putting the squeeze on Republicans to get them to accept new tax revenues as part of any budget deal. President Obama says people will lose their jobs if warns mandatory budget cuts kick in March 1. The president says the $85 billion in cuts--known as the sequester--are "severe." He's urging a Democratic plan of tax revenue and targeted budget cuts; the GOP says he got any taxes he wanted in the fiscal cliff deal.
Five months after taking off work for a bone marrow transplant, Robin Roberts got a presidential welcome back when she returned to GMA today. In a video, President and First Lady Obama called her an inspiration, and she also got messages from former ESPN colleagues and Magic Johnson. She's recovering from MDS, a bone-marrow disease.
Running point on the White House's gun control push, Vice President Biden tells a Facebook forum hosted by Parents Magazine that they don't want to disarm law-abiding Americans. Biden contends nobody needs an ar-15 to defend his family; a shotgun will do just fine--like the two he owns which he's told his wife to use if need be.
Meanwhile, an uptick in residents seeking gun permits in Cobb County is great for the county's bottom line. Of the $72.25 cost, $22 goes to the county--and last month, Cobb saw 1,855 applications, which is more three times more than last January.
Florida's State Attorney Angela Corey says she will personally prosecute the man charged with killing a 17-year-old after an argument over loud music coming from a truck carrying some teenagers. Forty-six-year-old Michael Dunn, who took off for his Brevard County home after pumping eight or nine shots into the SUV, is charged with the first-degree murder of Jordan Davis, who lived part-time with his mom in Marietta.

Joe Hundley is free on $10,000 dollars bond. Conditions of his release include no consumption of alcohol or possessing of firearms. Hundley must also surrender his passport and he cannot travel outside of Idaho, eastern Washington state, or the northern district of Georgia. The tot's mom accuses him of being drunk and telling her to "Shut that [n-word] baby up" when their plane was about to land.
In KISS news about your health: maybe we are what we eat when it comes to clear skin. A new study shows acne may indeed be linked to diet. Researchers found increasing evidence that the strongest link is between certain carbohydrate-rich foods which rank high on the glycemic index and acne. Some of those foods are white bread, chips and white potatoes; some dairy products may also play a small role. Despite popular belief, chocolate does not appear to cause breakouts.

Motorists can expect longer lines and higher fees at county tag offices across Georgia as new vehicle tax laws take effect March 1. The new title tax law replaces sales tax and the annual "birthday" tax with a one-time fee. Some county tax commissioners are recommending that motorists should use phone or mail-in options to avoid long wait times. Those who buy a new or used vehicle March 1 or after will automatically pay the one-time fee. People who bought vehicles between January 1, 2012, and February 28 of this year will have the choice of the single payment or continuing the "birthday tax."
