A Cobb County man may be set free, six years after his conviction for a killing that even police said was self-defense. The NAACP has rallied in support of John McNeil, a black man who shot a white man to death on his property after Brian Epp lunged at him with a knife and had threatened his son. A judge just ruled that the jury should have been told that McNeil has a right to defend himself against someone with a deadly weapon. If the state doesn't appeal, McNeil will get to go home. The stand-your-ground case has been in the spotlight since the death of Trayvon Martin in Florida.

It is the first week in October, and that means the fall session of the United States Supreme Court is beginning. Decisions could be ahead on affirmative action on college campuses, gay marriage, and voting rights. Already today, the SCOTUS has decided not to consider a Michigan man's attempt to challenge the use of full body scanners at airports. The high court today refused to hear an appeal by Jonathan Corbett, who wanted to challenge the Transportation Security Administration's use of full body scanners or enhanced pat-downs at airport security lines.

For the second time in as many weeks, a Georgia Tech fan has fallen at Bobby Dodd Stadium. On Saturday, a Tech freshman was treated for a shoulder injury after he fell 15 feet from his seat as the Yellow Jackets played Middle Tennessee State. Too much TV is not good for young children, even if it's television that is playing in the background. And a new study finds American kids are exposed to a lot more "background TV" than you'd think--some six hours a day. The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned against background TV, especially in homes with children under age two, because it can harm a child's cognitive functioning and social play.
The Boy Scouts of America says it's checking its years of files to make sure no pedophiles have fallen through the cracks. Abusers are named in the organization's so-called perversion files, and a court-ordered release of the files from 1965 to 1985 is expected sometime this month.
