Georgia's Unemployment Rate Drops; New Allegations In Hit & Run Case; Clayton County Woman Charged; Papa John's Faces A Lawsuit; The Great American Smokeout; Is There A Doctor Shortage?

By Veronica Harrell

Georgia's unemployment rate is on the decline. The State Labor department announced this week that Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment number dropped to 8.7 percent in October from 9.0 percent in September. A year ago the jobless rate was nearly 10 percent, holding last October at 9.7 percent. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the decrease is because Georgia added 36,000 new jobs, which is the largest employment increase ever.

A Clayton County woman accused of trying to steal a newborn from a local hospital pleaded guilty this week to kidnapping and false imprisonment. Authorities say Naquelle Ballard admitted to buying scrubs and pretending to work at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale when she stole a baby from its mother in January. Police say in attempt to flee the hospital Ballard stuffed the infant inside of her purse. The 19 year old says she took the child because she miscarried and didn't want to tell her boyfriend, so she was planning to pretend as if the child was hers. Ballard was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Police are looking into allegations about the man at the center of a deadly hit-and-run involving a Henry County Police Officer. An employee at a Stockbridge towing and roadside service company says Gordon Jarrett is a scam artist. Jarrett is accused of calling the company several times in the past because he ran out of gas. An employee at the company says they serviced Jarrett 4 times in one week, but never received payment, only bounced checks. On Monday evening Officer Elgin Daniel was struck and killed as he assisted Jarrett on Hwy 138. The hit-and-run driver has since been charged.

Is the U.S. running out of doctors? A new study says the United States will need 52-thousand more physicians by 2025, or millions of Americans might have no access to adequate healthcare.  Researchers say a shortage of primary care doctors could be the result of an aging population and the Affordable Care Act, which will expand health insurance coverage to an additional 38 million people.

Papa John's is facing a lawsuit from customers over text messages.  The pizza chain is the target of a quarter-billion dollar class-action lawsuit for flooding customers with illegal text messages.  The suit claims that Papa John's franchises sent customers a total of 500-thousand unwanted messages in early 2010.

The American Cancer Society is marking the 37th Great American Smokeout today by encouraging smokers to use this day to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking.  Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States.

KISS 104 Weather Forecast: Cloudy with a high of 55.
