The campaigning is done; now it's up to the voters. President Barack Obama is back in Illinois to await results, while challenger Mitt Romney will be in Boston. Election Day came early for more than a third of Americans, who cast ballots days or even weeks in advance.
This morning, residents in the two tiny northern New Hampshire villages of Dixville Notch and Hart's Location got to cast the first Election Day votes at midnight. President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney got five votes apiece in Dixville Notch. In Hart's Location, Mr. Obama got 23 votes, Romney received 9 and Libertarian Gary Johnson got 2 votes.
Georgia voters will decide today what has been a sometimes heated debate over public charter schools policy. Gov. Nathan Deal is leading the push for a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to set up a new appointed government commission that could issue charters to independent school operators.
Georgia's Secretary of State Brian Kemp is looking into complaints that some registered Fulton County voters are not showing up on the voter rolls. He says they are double-checking the complaints and finding that people who should be on the logs are not there. The county insists it knows of no widespread problems, but the last election this summer found many had gotten incorrect registration cards, turnout in some precincts above the number of registered voters, and its elections supervisor resigned his position from jail.
KISS news about your health: a daily multivitamin apparently does nothing to cut the risk of heart attack and stroke in men. Researchers tracked some 14,000 men for over a decade in coming up with these results--but did find that there does appear to be a slightly lower risk of cancer with a daily multivitamin.
Apparently Budweiser doesn't believe all publicity is good publicity. While Denzel Washington's new movie "Flight" is garnering award buzz for his portrayal of an alcoholic pilot, the beer company doesn't like its co-starring role. Anheuser-Busch is upset that in one scene, Washington's character is drinking a Bud while driving. They say the studio didn't consult them on including their product in the film, and they want their logo obscured in current and future releases of the movie.
Already dealing with budget woes, now DeKalb County's school system has to come up with a bunch of money to repay the feds. Seems the district misspent more than $900,000 worth of Title One grant money on ineligible items. The state auditor emphasizes that the expenditures were not illegal, just not covered under Title One.
A DeKalb County jury deadlocks on whether to convict a Tae Kwon Do instructor of rape. Adrian Spellen, 28, was accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old student in his Powerkicks martial arts studio near Lithonia last year. The district attorney, Robert James, says he will retry Spellen.
Atlanta's Watershed Management department will repay some 3,500 customers about $7.5 million. After a customer complained, the staffers looked into it and found that thousands of customers were overcharged between July 2008 and September 2010. After City Council approval, the checks could be in the mail by Thanksgiving.
A Cleveland, Ohio woman will have to stand on a city intersection for two days next week with a sign reading, "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus." Shena Hardin, 32, was caught on camera driving up onto a sidewalk to get around a school bus that was unloading children. It's part of her punishment, in addition to a $250 fine and having her license suspended for 30 days.
Instagram is coming to the Internet. The photo-sharing app created for mobile phones is expanding to the Web over the next several days, and users will now have a website with a profile bio and a selection of their recently-shared snapshots.
