For the first time, racial andethnic minorities make up more than half the children born in the U. S. People of color made up roughly 2.02 million, or 50.4%, of American births in the 12-month period ending July 2011. The Census defines "minority" as anyone who is not single-race white and not Hispanic.
Howard University sociologist Roderick Harrison called it a landmark, saying, "This generation is growing up much more accustomed to diversity than its elders."
In Atlanta, Hispanic growth was down from its peak growth years of 2005-2006, when the city was one of the 30 metropolitan areas with the fastest Latino growth. Black population growth in Atlanta also saw a steep dropoff as the housing bust kept many blacks locked into big cities. The southern migration of blacks was also down in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Orlando. Meanwhile, metro areas including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco had reduced declines or gains in black population growth.

Georgia's jobs picture is looking up. The unemployment rate has dropped below 9% for the first time in three years. Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the decline was due in part to the creation of almost 32,000 new jobs. The biggest job gains were recorded in trade and transportation, leisure and hospitality and professional and business services.
An all-out search goes on for the man who pointed a rifle at a Clayton County school bus on Paladin Drive near Hampton on Monday. When a neighbor yelled at him, the man reportedly dropped the gun and a notebook that listed bus numbers as he ran away. The man also allegedly fired another weapon at a second neighbor who chased him. Police aren't confirming the contents of the notebook. The ATF will examine the rifle.

Authorities in Cobb County are on the lookout for three men dressed as police officers who tried to break into a Marietta home. A man heard them banging on his back door, and they demanded that he let them in because they were police. When the homeowner on Chisolm Trail called 911, the phony cops fled. One of the three black male suspects had twists in his hair and "tattoos about his face."
In KISS news about your health: Enjoy that java; new research finds coffee may help you live longer. A study in the new New England Journal of Health found that men who had two to three cups of coffee a day were 10% less likely to die at any age; for women, it was 13%. The strongest effect was seen in women who drank four to five cups per day; they saw a 16% lower risk of death. It didn't matter if it was regular or decaf; researchers found that caffeine didn't play a role in the results. Even a single cup a day seemed to lower risk a little: 6% in men and 5% in women. Be careful of the cream and sugar, however; too much extra fat and calories could negate the positive effects of coffee.
The gospel star who delivered the eulogy at Whitney Houston's funeral has been the victim of a carjacking in his native Detroit. Pastor Marvin Winans had his car and cash swiped from him Wednesday while filling his tank at a gas station on the city's west side.

Seattle Police investigate a strange car break-in. The vandal who smashed the Jeep's window didn't steal anything, but instead scattered a dozen tortillas all over the vehicle. Police broke out the puns, reminding car prowlers that "you shouldn't break in to something that's nachos."
The second plaintiff suing John Travolta for allegedly propositioning him during a massage appointment is dropping the case. Lawyer Okorie Okorocha says he was fired by the Atlanta man known in court papers only as John Doe #2, just a day after John Doe #1 withdrew from the lawsuit after Travolta was able to produce proof that he was out of town on the January 16 date in the complaint based in Beverly Hills. The firing effectively ends the lawsuit. Okorocha says "personality conflicts" contributed to the firing, but that the incorrect date in the suit would have made it difficult for the second client to proceed. He says the date should have been January 15. John Doe #1 is now being represented by Gloria Allred and they will discuss whether a new suit should be filed.
