Atlanta Public Schools may slice hundreds of jobs for the 2012-13 school year, as it faces down a $47 million budget shortfall. Among those are up to 230 teachers, 90 custodians, and 14 transportation staffers. Some job cuts may come through attrition, and some may come as those implicated in CRCT cheating leave the district.
Florida A&M University's prestigious marching band, scarred by the hazing death of one of its drum majors, won't be taking the field for at least another year. The president says the Marching 100 should not take the field again until a new director is hired and new rules are in place. Those new guidelines will set academic standards for band members and limit how long one can remain in the group. As many as 101 people who were on the travel roster last November, when Robert Champion suffered a fatal beating aboard a band bus, were not enrolled at FAMU.
The man accused in seven south DeKalb County bank robberies since last July is in custody. The FBI says 33-year-old Benjamin Rivers would stand in line, talking on a cell phone, then present an available teller with a demand note that said he had a weapon.
Investigating the mystery of the beating of a DeKalb police sergeant's wife, authorities note she was also robbed when she was attacked outside the couple's Lithonia home and left unconscious outside the garage. They are looking at robbery as a motive.
In Mississippi, two drivers are pulled over--and shot to death. Investigators can't rule out that a killer may be posing as a cop, since the motorists were both found on the side of the road. One man's body was in his vehicle, which crashed into a median divider; a woman was found in the road near her car, which was on the shoulder. A district attorney reminds motorists--when you see flashing lights, you're allowed to slow down, call 911 to verify that a real officer is trying to pull you over, and wait until you get to a lighted, populated area to stop.
The state Department of Transportation hopes the second day of lane changes along Georgia 400 goes better than day one. Suggestions are to put up signs telling drivers about the availability of the shoulder as a travel lane on a section of 400 South. It's open for three hours each weekday morning, 6:30-9:30 a.m.
A Utah judge has dealt a blow to a bid by Gary Coleman's ex-wife to gain control of the late child TV star's estate. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the judge ruled today that Coleman and Shannon Price didn't have a common-law marriage, despite living together after they divorced.
A Newark airport security worker, 20 years on the job, is busted for identity theft. Since 1992, the 54-year-old Nigerian immigrant had been using the ID of a Queens murder victim named Jerry Thomas who was killed tht same year. The imposter was arrested at his home this week after an anonymous tip. He had been a security guard for years and worked more recently as a security supervisor, passing several background checks.
