The Supreme Court votes today on President Obama's Affordable Care Act--in a way. The justices will take a straw poll, telling each other which way they're leaning. But those decisions could change between now and when the final decision is due by this June, as they turn over each other's opinions and dissents.
Are you feeling lucky today? If so, you're probably on your way to buy a Mega Millions ticket. Despite long odds of one in 176 million, lottery fever is running high, and Georgians this week were snapping up tickets at the rate of 150,000 per hour. Emory math professor Skip Garibaldi says the odds are comparable to those of getting both audited by the IRS and hit by lightning. The jackpot is at $540 million and could climb again before Friday night's drawing. UPDATE: Just before noon, the Georgia Lottery confirmed that the jackpot has risen to $64o million.
George Zimmerman says he was defending himself against Trayvon Martin's ambush when he shot the unarmed teen to death. But the video police released of the 28-year-old a half-hour after the killing shows no signs of injury. Former Florida U. S. Attorney Kendall Coffey says it almost destroys Zimmerman's credibility, explaining, "He may well be able to provide medical experts who say that the signs of the injuries that he claimed happened might not appear on a video. But in a court of law, this video tells you that his self-defense claim is simply not supportable."
Zimmerman's brother, Robert, appeared on Piers Morgan's show on CNN and defended his brother. He said his brother didn't follow Martin: "He was not patrolling the neighborhood. He was going to a store--Target." He and the man's lawyer say that Zimmerman was treated by paramedics before being put in the police car. Read the partial police report here.
Director Spike Lee agrees to a settlement to compensate an elderly Florida couple for helping spread a Twitter posting wrongly listing their address as that of the man who shot the unarmed Trayvon Martin. The retweeted address is four miles from shooter George Zimmerman's house--and they're not related. Elaine & David McClain have a son named William George Zimmerman who used to live in that house in the '90s. Mrs. McClain says Lee called them personally to apologize and described him as "really kind...You could just tell he really felt bad about it. "
Georgia's legislative session has ended for the year. State lawmakers wrapped up the 40-day session Thursday with last-minute deals on legislation about abortion, education, criminal justice and other issues. Lawmakers are leaving the statehouse to campaign for re-election.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says diagnosis of Autism is on the rise, including a surge among black and Hispanic children. Experts think it's because of broader screening and improved diagnosis.
A judge dismisses part of a lawsuit stemming from the fatal shooting in 2010 of an Atlanta credit union CEO in New Jersey. The suit filed by Dean Gaymon's widow claims excessive force and civil rights violations. A Newark police detective says a scuffle went down after he was approached by Gaymon while investigating public sex in a park.
The appointment of a new chief executive at IBM has revived the debate over Augusta National's all-male membership just one week before the Masters golf tournament. IBM hired Virginia Rometty as its CEO this year. The last four CEO's at IBM all belonged to the club, which has never admitted women since it opened in 1933. There's been no comment from IBM or Augusta National.
