Super Tuesday is in the books, and the GOP race finds Mitt Romney winning six out of 10 states. Rick Santorum won three, and Newt Gingrich got an easy victory in Georgia. Ron Paul was shut out. Romney has a comfortable lead of delegates, holding as many delegates as all his rivals combined--but the race for the nomination is still far from finished.
Locally, the issue of Sunday package sales passed in every metro Atlanta jurisdiction where it was on the ballot. There will be a lag time between the vote and the sales in some areas, though. For example, DeKalb County will not start until May 1, to allow time for notifying businesses. Cobb and Gwinnett Counties will begin in June, allowing time to also change ordinances and process license applications.
The $7.1 million dollar bond issue to fund a new performing arts center at Marietta High School passed by fewer than 400 votes. Atlanta residents easily approved a four-year extension of a penny sales tax for mandatory water/sewer upgrades.
President Obama held a wide-ranging Tuesday news conference, opening it with the news of mortgage relief for millions. People with FHA-insured mortgages will be able to refinance at half the normal fee. Veterans & military members will get reconsideration on foreclosure decisions or decisions to deny lower interest rates.
The president also scoffed at those who contend he wants higher gasoline prices in order to promote alternative energy sources, saying, "Do you think the President of the United States going into re-election wants gas prices to go up higher? Is that--is there anybody here who thinks that makes a lot of sense?" Reporters chuckled. Mr. Obama said he'd asked Attorney General Eric Holder to examine whether speculation in the market was driving up prices.
Today is the day Apple may unveil a new version of the iPad at its event it San Francisco. Speculation is that it would have a faster processor, a sharper screen like the iPhone 4S, an option for faster wireless broadband access, and that it could also include the voice assistant, Siri. Some also wonder if Apple's invitation that said they had something people "need to see" means the company will start making television sets.
Paula Deen's lawyers say lawsuit claims of sexual harassment and racial discrimination will be proven false. Lisa Jackson, a white female, worked for five years at Uncle Bubba's in Savannah. She claims that black employees were required to use the back entrances and forbidden from using the customer restroom, which white employees were allowed to do. She says Deen's brother, Earl "Bubba" Hiers, watched porn at work, and that staff was subjected to a hostile environment.
A published report quotes a source as saying that the Indianapolis Colts will part ways with Peyton Manning. Barring a change of heart, the team is expected to release him into free agency rather than pay a $28 million bonus called for in his contract. Manning missed the entire last season because of neck surgeries and longer-than-expected rehab. A press conference is at noon today.
