Super Tuesday Arrives; Another Stone Mountain Kidnapping Attempt

By Veronica Waters

DeKalb County Police have stepped up patrols in a Stone Mountain neighborhood after two attempted kidnappings.  Twice in the past two months, someone has tried to snatch little girls from the North Hairston Road area.  The latest attempt was Sunday at the Stone Bridge Apartments, when a nine-year-old girl kicked and screamed to get away from a masked man who confronted her in a breezeway at the complex as she was walking home and began to drag her away.  On February 21, an 11-year-old girl was grabbed as she walked to school with friends; she fought, managed to squirm away, and ran to school.

Super Tuesday has arrived, and Georgia voters have a lot to consider today.  President Barack Obama is the obvious frontrunner in the Democratic presidential preference primary.  The GOP presidential preference primary finds Newt Gingrich hoping to regain momentum in the race.

At least 13 cities and counties across metro Atlanta will ask voters if they want to approve Sunday package sales.  Among them are unincorporated Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties, and the cities of Marietta, Conyers and Powder Springs.

In the city of Atlanta, a 1-cent Municipal Option Sales Tax to pay for court-ordered water and sewer system upgrades is up for another four-year extension.  Mayor Kasim Reed says if it doesn't pass, residents will see water bills jump even higher--25-30%.

In Marietta, voters say yea or nay on a $7.1 million bond referendum to help fund a performing arts center for Marietta High School.

A report by the Education Department says more than 70% of students involved in school-related cases referred to law enforcement are black or Hispanic.  The report also says black students are more than three times more likely than white students to be suspended or expelled.  Education Secretary Arne Duncan says some school officials might not be aware of how they unevenly hand out discipline.

The State Senate has voted to approve a bill that would prohibit illegal immigrant students from Georgia's public colleges, universities and technical schools.

Calling the decision "very difficult," Atlanta Public Schools' Superintendent Erroll Davis has approved the closure of 13 schools as part of a redistricting plan--the system's first in 10 years.

The sense of economic optimism grows.  The Associated Press surveyed top economists, who are predicting the unemployment rate could drop from 8.3% to 8% by Election Day.  The previous prediction was 8.4%.  The economy experts also say the jobless rate could be 7.4% by the end of next year.

The KISS 104 weather forecast:  sunny, high of 60.
