King Day Politics; Mini Cooper Recall; Stacey English Search Continues; Deen Has Diabetes

By Veronica Waters

Politics loomed over the ceremonies held Monday to mark the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s holiday as black clergy, elected officials and others tied the civil rights icon's legacy to the 2012 election, urging African-Americans to re-elect President Barack Obama and condemning voter ID laws they warned are meant to suppress black voters.

At King's spiritual home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rev. Raphael G. Warnock accused GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich of using racial stereotypes to fire up Republican voters. On the campaign trail, Gingrich has referred to Obama as "the food stamp president" and earlier this month, he suggested that African-Americans seek paychecks rather than public assistance.

Warnock called Gingrich's comments "sickening and insulting."

During the GOP debate in South Carolina, the audience gave Gingrich a standing ovation when he was asked whether he could see that his recent remarks--that blacks should demand jobs instead of food stamps, and that poor children have no work ethic--were insulting to all Americans but especially black Americans. Gingrich said, "No, I don't see that."

He then told the Pulitzer Prize-winning Williams, who said Gingrich seemed to be belittling people, “First of all, Juan”--then another small cheer from the crowd--“the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history."

About 89,000 Turbocharged Mini Coopers are being recalled so BMW can replace their water pumps for free. The turbocharged Mini Cooper, Cooper S and Clubman coupes and convertibles have an electronic circuit board on the water pump which could overheat and catch fire. Eight of the 12 complaints BMW has gotten so far involved cars that were parked with the engine off; five were fully engulfed. BMW will begin notifying owners in February. The affected Minis were made from November 16, 2006 to January 18, 2011.

Dive teams return today through Thursday to a lake near the Aaron's Lakewood Amphitheatre, searching for clues to the disappearance of Stacey English. The Buckhead woman hasn't been heard from since the night after Christmas. Atlanta Police have no evidence that she might be there, but her car was found relatively nearby and police say they are being thorough--and going over the water in a precise grid. Officers are leaning over the boat and trailing their hands in the water, some of which is shallow. Friends said English was acting oddly and quoting Bible scriptures shortly before she disappeared. A Missouri man who was visiting her over the holidays said she asked him if he was Satan.

He was shot in an Applebee's parking lot in Gwinnett County because he and a buddy were cheering for the 49ers over the Saints. Now, 30-year old Chris Middleton's mother wants to know why police weren't called to the restaurant earlier. Michelle Gore says that witnesses reported seeing accused gunman David Ayro "acting up," drinking, taking pills, and making threats shortly before the shooting Saturday. A second man was also grazed by a bullet. Middleton was shot in the abdomen and underwent more surgery Monday.

Wikipedia says it's going dark for 24 hours on Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation before Congress. Critics say the bill, which would allow blacklisting of sites that allegedly distribute pirated content, would hurt a free and open Internet.

In KISS news about your health: When it comes to weight loss surgery, bypass beats the band. Swiss researchers found that patients lost more weight, lost it faster and sustained the weight loss more after gastric bypass than those who did gastric banding. Scientists say there is a higher risk of up-front complications with bypass, yet a higher rate of complications with banding years down the road. After six years, nearly half of patients who chose gastric banding in the study were still obese, and also had more long-term problems and follow-up operations.

Down-home cook Paula Deen reveals she has type-2 diabetes. She's known for three years, and says it's not because she was protecting her reputation as a kitchen wiz known for heavy-calorie cooking that she didn't tell anyone before now. Instead, Deen said she needed to be armed with more information before she told anyone about it. She's now introducing new diabetic-friendly recipes and is spokeswoman for a diabetes medication. Deen says she's now hitting the treadmill regularly--and giving up sweet tea.

How'd you like to have it your way--delivered to your door? Burger King is testing out delivery service in the metro-DC area with an eye on expanding if it works well. Four restaurants are delivering burgers, fries and other menu items with the help of new thermal packaging the chain hopes will combat the perception that fast food doesn't travel well or reheat nicely at home.

The KISS 104 weather forecast: mostly cloudy; chance of rain goes up to 80% late this afternoon and evening. High 63, lows tonight 34-39.
