Economy Brightens, Obama Poll Numbers Up; Chris Brown & Rihanna Back Together--Musically

By Veronica Waters

Seven Marines were killed when their two helicopters collided Wednesday night near Yuma.  The California-based troops were doing a training exercise when their Cobra and Huey helicopters crashed in midair.  No one survived.

Accused killer and former Georgia Tech and pro basketball star Javaris Crittenton is back behind bars after a run in with a Riverdale policeman over a speeding ticket.  Police say Crittenton was clocked doing 60 MPH in a 45, and was argumentative when pulled over by the officer, refusing to sign the citation.  He's also been charged with obstruction.  Crittenton faces prosecution over last summer's death of a 23-year-old woman; police contend she was not his intended victim--that he was shooting at someone who had allegedly stolen thousands of dollars in jewelry from him.

An argument over money apparently prompted the murder/suicide inside a Norcross spa and sauna Tuesday night.  Police say the gunman was related to all the victims, either by blood or by marriage.  He shot his two sisters and their husbands, then himself.

There's more evidence this morning that the job market is improving.  The Labor Department says 351,000 people applied for jobless benefits last week, unchanged from the week before.  The four-week average of applications dropped for a sixth week to its lowest point in four years.

President Barack Obama has signed the payroll tax cut extension into law.  The $143 billion measure that Congress passed overwhelmingly on Friday continues the 2% reduction in the tax that funds Social Security.

President Obama's re-election prospects continue to brighten along with America's mood about the economy.  A new AP-GfK poll finds Democrats and Republicans increasingly saying the country is moving in the right direction, with most independents approving of how he's handling the economy.  The president is set to address concerns about rising gas prices, which Republicans on the campaign trail have taken up as an issue.  He's discussing his energy policy today in Florida.

The president returns to Atlanta March 16 for a fundraising trip.

A 21-year-old Cobb County woman is charged with fatally stabbing her sister with a steak knife during a Monday-night argument at the family's home in Mableton.  Chakaya Folborg was arrested early Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault and murder in the death of 21-year-old Kourtney Dyche.

An AJC report says Atlanta Public Schools teachers implicated in CRCT cheating have to report to a meeting today to discuss their employment.  Superintendent Erroll Davis says he is determined to get the guilty teachers off the payroll by May, before their contracts are automatically renewed.  Termination hearings have been delayed, he says, by the parallel criminal investigation ongoing in the district attorney's office.

Chris Brown and Rihanna are back together--musically, at least.  After days of Twitter teasing, two songs featuring the pair hit the Internet Monday.  Brown admitted to assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna at a pre-Grammys Awards party in 2009.  He's serving five years of probation for the felony attack.  Brown is on Rihanna's remix of "Birthday Cake," and she's on a new version of his tune "Turn up the Music."

Under the Gold Dome:  House lawmakers take up a bill to outlaw assisted suicide in Georgia.  A Senate committee approves a bill that would bar illegal immigrants from attending the state's public colleges and universities.

The widow of victim Rusty Sneiderman, Andrea Sneiderman wraps her testimony at the trial of Dunwoody daycare shooter Hemy Neuman--always denying an affair with him, at times quite defiant.  A bartender testified that she'd seen Sneiderman and Neuman kissing and groping each other on a dance floor.  The man who sold Neuman the gun also took the stand.

The stepmother and grandmother of a nine-year-old Alabama girl are jailed on murder charges, accused of making the little girl run to her death.  Police say Savannah Hardin suffered a seizure after being forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar.  An autopsy showed she was severely dehydrated and had a very low sodium level.

Now that the governor has withdrawn support, House Republicans in Virginia are dropping a measure to force women to have an invasive ultrasound procedure before terminating a pregnancy.  Hundreds of women locked arms outside the state capitol Monday in protest.  Governor McDonnell clarified women should not be forced to undergo an invasive procedure without their consent.

An Ohio animal rights activist allegedly plotted to kill a random stranger for wearing fur.  The FBI says Meredith Lowell advertised for a hit man on Facebook and was contacted by an undercover agent posing as a contract killer.  They say she wanted the hit carried out near the library so she could pass out reading materials afterward.

The KISS 104 weather forecast:  hazy, breezy and mild, with an unseasonably warm high of 76.  Tonight, a 70% chance of rain moving in after midnight and lows 52-57.  Friday, mostly cloudy, 60% of morning showers, high of 58.
