Young Mom Killed in Hit & Run; Whitney Houston's Home Going Complete

By Veronica Waters

Looking for leads, Union City Police overnight recreated the hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a young mother.  Latara Worthy, 29, was hit after she got out of the vehicle she was in around 3:00 Sunday morning; her family doesn't know why she started walking on South Fulton Parkway.  People who live near South Fulton's intersection with Mason Road call it a dangerous stretch.  Worthy, a teacher who is mother to a one-year-old baby girl, died two days before her 30th birthday and weeks before she was set to receive her master's degree.  Her relatives plead with the driver of the car--which a witness says appeared to be a white Pontiac Grand Prix--to surrender to police.

After a star-studded funeral Saturday, Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday next to her father John at a New Jersey cemetery.  Some fans jogged next to the hearse as it began its drive Sunday, yelling, "We love you, Whitney!"  Bobby Brown left the home going services early because of a mixup over seating; it seems the ushers kept moving him and his children--Houston's stepchildren--around, and he got too upset to stay.  There are reports Houston's teenage daughter, Bobbi Kristina, disappeared after the funeral Saturday and got high.  A family spokesperson tells The Daily Beast that that's untrue, that the 18-year-old simply took some time to be alone.  The spokesperson wouldn't comment on rumors that her family is trying to get her into rehab.

The first auction connected to Whitney Houston has already been scheduled.  A black velvet dress that belonged to Houston and a vest and pair of earrings she wore in "The Bodyguard" will be sold to the highest bidder March 31.  Darren Julien, celebrity auctioneer, says the items became available after her sudden February 11 death.  The vest is valued at $400, the earrings at $600, and the dress is valued at $1,000 but could command much more at the sale.

A second suspect in the videotaped beatdown of a 20-year-old gay man is now in police custody.  Nineteen-year-old Dorian Moragne surrendered to Atlanta Police Friday afternoon.  A third suspect is still at large.

Cobb County is considering a ban on smoking in all its parks and recreation areas, and is seeking public input on the proposal.  The county seat, Marietta, has already enacted its own park smoking ban, and violators there can face fines of $500.

ESPN fires a website writer for a story headline about New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin.  The title used an expression which contains a word that can also be used as an ethnic slur for "Chinese" as it focused on Lin's nine turnovers in the Knicks' Friday-night loss.  An anchor who used the phrase was suspended; the anchor apologized, pointing out that his wife is Asian and that he would never have intentionally done anything to offend that community.  Lin says he doesn't think the slur was intentional and that he's already forgiven those involved.
