A deadly shooting rocks an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. The gunman in today's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school has been identified by a law enforcement official as Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher at the school. Authorities say the gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children before committing suicide. Reports say his mother, Nancy, was shot at the school. The shooting unfolded in two rooms, say police. Three guns were found: a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols, inside the school, and a .223-caliber rifle in the back of a car. Police said Lanza drove up from New Jersey in his mother's car.
Youngsters and their parents have described teachers locking doors and ordering children to huddle in the corner or hide in closets when shots echoed through the building.
President Barack Obama says he grieves first as a father for the victims of today's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school. DURING remarks in the White House briefing room, the president said, "our hearts are broken today." He came close to breaking down, as his voice caught several times and he wiped tears from both eyes, pausing to regain his composure.
"The majority of those who died were children - beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," the president said. He paused for several seconds to gather himself as he teared up and wiped an eye. Nearby, two aides cried and held hands as they listened to Mr. Obama.
"They had their entire lives ahead of them - birthdays, graduations, wedding, kids of their own," Obama continued about the victims. "Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children." He also said, "Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter," he said. "But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight, and they need all us of right now."
President Obama ordered U.S. flags be flown at half-staff through Tuesday.
After adamant opposition from GOP senators, UN Ambassador Susan Rice withdraws her name from consideration to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They criticized her over her initial comments about the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya--comments made from information given to her by intelligence officials. The initial response--that it was an uprising over an anti-Muslim video--was later proven wrong, as the September 11, 2012 assault that killed four Americans turned out to have been a terrorist attack.
In Rice's letter to the president, she wrote, "The position of secretary of state should never be politicized. As someone who grew up in an era of comparative bipartisanship and as a sitting U.S. national security official who has served in two U.S. administrations, I am saddened that we have reached this point, even before you have decided whom to nominate."
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry may now be at the top of President Obama's short list for the job. "While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character," said the president. Mr. Obama meets with Ambassador Rice privately today. She could still become his next national security adviser, should Tom Donilan move into a different position.
A 13-year-old Cobb County girl is facing criminal charges as an adult, after her newborn was found stuffed inside a shoebox buried under some leaves behind a Mableton Parkway apartment complex. A family friend tells a local TV station that while her middle school classmates knew she and a 14-year-old boy were expecting, their parents had no idea. The teen mom is charged with felony murder, child cruelty and concealing a death. The boy is not facing any charges. Cobb Police have not revealed whether the baby was alive when it was put into the box.
A grand jury in Jacksonville, Florida has indicted a man on a first-degree murder charge, for last month's fatal shooting of a teenager from Marietta. Michael Dunn, 46, was initially charged with second-degree murder, in the death of Jordan Davis. The victim and three friends were in an SUV parked outside a convenience store November 23, listening to music. Dunn pulled up, complained it was too loud, words were exchanged, and he fired at least eight shots into the SUV. He claims he saw a gun.
Some Republicans are saying it's time to end the debate on tax rates. There were few signs of progress after House Speaker John Boehner met last night with President Barack Obama to continue their discussions on averting the so-called "fiscal cliff," due to take effect in January. Republicans such as Sen. Richard Burr of N.C., says it's time for Boehner to bend on extending tax cuts for the middle class and address upper income earners later, when lawmakers start discussing tax reform.
Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson is apologizing for his use of what he calls the "M-word" during a speech on the House floor in which he referred to an unfair fight. "What happens when you put, in a cage fight, a giant in with a midget? Well, the midget will not win the fight, I'm going to tell you that." After complaints, he found that people were offended because they prefer the term “little people” to describe those with dwarfism, and "midget" is no longer socially acceptable--much like the N-word. He said he used the term out of ignorance, not spite--and won't do so again.
The TSA detains a 12-year-old girl in a wheelchair for nearly an hour, after agents at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport claimed her hands tested positive for explosives. Shelbi Walser was weeping and her mom was kept away from her during that time. Turns out her hands may have picked up fertilizer residue on her chair's wheels.
An unexpected surprise for some Home Depot online shoppers: they got their merchandise free. Home Depot was offering $101 off an appliance--but that discount got applied to all orders. That meant people buying things under $100 got them gratis. While the store quickly realized its mistake, they also reassured the lucky customers that they would still get their merchandise for free.
