A DeKalb County cop resigns his job after confessing to a charge of theft by taking in Cobb County. The arrest warrant says Akii Myers' young nephew found a wallet in a bowling alley bathroom and gave it to his uncle--who was seen on surveillance video taking $500 and the owner's ID out of it before handing the wallet over to the staff. Myers' wife, Laprencilla, is facing a theft charge as well, because he handed the cash to her before turning in the wallet. DeKalb Police say Myers was off-duty and on military leave at the time of the theft.
The teen who gunned down a Clayton County sheriff's deputy last summer gets life without parole, plus 70 years. District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson calls now-18-year-old Jonathan Bun one of the scariest offenders she's ever seen, saying there was "just kind of darkness" in his eyes and that if the law had allowed her to seek the death penalty, she would have. Capital punishment is banned for juvenile offenders, and Bun was 17 when he shot Rick Daly to death during a traffic stop in July 2011.

He broke his leg--and still finished the race. American sprinter Manteo Mitchell was about halfway through the first leg of his 4x400 relay preliminary when he heard a loud "Pop!" which he said "felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half." The 25-year-old North Carolina native said he just chanted to himself, "Faith, focus, finish" and kept going. Sure enough, a doctor diagnosed him with a broken fibula--which he had run on for about 200 meters. The USA squad tied the Bahamas in the second heat in 2 minutes, 58.87 seconds--the fastest time ever run in the first round of the relay at the Olympics. The finals are today.

A 4-team trade to send All-Star Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers is done. Philadelphia would get All-Star center Andrew Bynum from Los Angeles and Jason Richardson from Orlando, while Denver would get 76ers All-Star Andre Iguodala, playing for the U.S. men's basketball team Friday in the Olympics semifinals against Argentina. Orlando would receive Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington from Denver, Nikola Vucevic and Moe Harkless from Philadelphia, and lottery protected first-round picks from each of the three teams. Howard averaged 20.6 points and 14.5 rebounds in 54 regular-season games for Orlando last season. In eight seasons with the Magic, he averaged 18.4 points and 13.0 rebounds.
Chipper Jones has been on Twitter for barely two weeks, but he's already got more than 100,000 followers--and one of them may work at a New York hotel. The Atlanta Braves third baseman got some speedy service at a Hyatt, thanks to a Twitter rant. After tweeting about the faulty air conditioning, the mattress, and the cable system, he got a visit from someone at the hotel within what looks like moments, according to his timeline. His last tweet remarked about "the power of social media"--saying the TV guy had just shown up at his door, and he didn't even have to call the front desk.
Some Penn State students and fans lash out at the NCAA with a new T-shirt. It's a hot seller at the independently-run campus bookstore; it shows the NCAA logo with the "C" as a hammer and sickle--and calls college sports' governing body the "National Communist Athletic Association." The back of the shirt accuses the group of overstepping its bounds and punishing the innocent. The NCAA slapped the school with a $60 million fine and other sanctions including banning post-season play and reducing football scholarships in the wake of evidence that late coach Joe Paterno and other school officials looked the other way as former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused boys, sometimes on school property.
