George Zimmerman Granted Bond; Coach Resigns Amid Recruitment Flap; Starbucks Ditching Beetle Juice

By Veronica Waters

A judge has granted a $150,000 bond for George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman's father, testifying by phone, said he did not consider his son a violent person, saying he would instead "turn the other cheek." Conditions of the bond include mandatory electronic monitoring; no guns or alcohol; and a 7:00 p.m. curfew. He has been banned from contacting any members of Martin's family.

In a surprise move, Zimmerman took the stand at his bail hearing, and made a statement.

"I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son," he said. "I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. And I did not know if he was armed or not."

Zimmerman had requested to meet with Martin's family before the hearing, but was told by the family's lawyers that it was the wrong time. A statemement said they felt the timing of the request was very self-serving.

An assistant principal at a DeKalb elementary school is in hot water after apparently showing a 5th-grade student lewd pictures on a cell phone. Azure Dasgupta said the administrator showed her a photo of the private parts of one of her male classmates, asking her if she'd sent it to someone else. Later, school officials realized that although the girl's name was attached to the text, it had been spoofed and the phone number didn't match hers. Dasgupta's mother says the assistant principal apologized.

Did a New Zealand woman die from too much Coca-Cola? Thirty-year-old Natasha Harris suffered a fatal heart attack in February, 2010. A pathologist testified at her inquest yesterday that Harris drank 2 gallons of Coca-Cola a day and probably suffered from excess caffeine and low potassium as a result. She also smoked--about 30 cigarettes a day--and had poor overall dietary habits. A spokeswoman for Coca-Cola says its products are perfectly safe in moderation.

Governor Deal has signed legislation that gradually eliminates Georgia's annual car tax and gives perks to businesses who locate here. In addition, the tax overhaul allows married couples to increase by $2,000 dollars the amount of income they can shield from state income tax.

Vinyl never really went away and now it's making a bit of a comeback -- in the recording industry. Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Paul McCartney and the late James Brown are among musicians going old school--releasing music on vinyl records to help celebrate Record Store Day today. Nearly 2,000 independent music retailers still exist, thanks in large part to old style vinyl records.

Amid allegations that he illegally recruited former players, Shiloh High School head football coach Brian Montgomery has stepped down. Montgomery left North Atlanta High last year and four of his former players followed him to Gwinnett County. Montgomery insists that was simply a coincidence. At last night's school board meeting, he officially resigned. Montgomery's resignation will keep a contract non-renewal letter out of his personnel file. The GHSA is still investigating any possible illegal recruiting.

A Bartow County man faces multiple charges after Cartersville Police raided his Walker Street home and found drugs and thousands of dollars worth of stolen items. Cartersville Police Lt. Mark Camp said Leroy Windom would apparently trade anything of value for cocaine. During a raid Tuesday, cops found clothes from Walmart with the tags still attached, high dollar tires and rims, jewelry, lawn mowers and even activiated Home Depot gift cards. Authorities are in the process of returning the stolen items to the rightful owners.

Starbucks will no longer use crushed bugs in its drinks and desserts. Customers didn't like the idea of consuming things colored with the red dye made from a tiny beetle, so the company will replace it with a dye made from tomato extract. The beetle juice dye was used in Starbucks strawberry drinks, in raspberry swirl cake and red velvet whoopie pie. It's also commonly found in lipsticks and shampoos. Starbucks will phase out the beetle dye by June.
