Disease Prompts Venus To Leave US Open; iPhone Prototype Left In Bar; Angelou Says Paraphrase 'Minimizes' MLK
- President Barack Obama's jobs and economy address to a joint session of Congress next week is a grand stage to unveil his economic agenda. But House Speaker John Boehner balked at the September 7 date because of a Republican presidential candidates' debate that evening. White House spokesman Jay Carney points out, "There's one president. There's twenty-some odd debates," but the president switched the speech to September 8. That Thursday night, he'll go head-to-head with the NFL season opener.
- Poet Maya Angelou complains that one of the quotes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the DC Memorial is taken out of context, and makes him sound like an "arrogant twit."
The words were from a sermon King delivered Feb. 4, 1968, at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, two months before he was assassinated, about a eulogy that could be given when he died.
King said, "Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.''
The memorial reads only, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.''
Angelou tells the Washington Post King that now the shortened version makes him sound egocentric and "minimizes the man," making him seem "less than the humanitarian he was." Memorial planners say they had to shorten the quote for space reasons. - A 24-year-old Gwinnett County mom said she had no choice but to leave her kids in the car while she went to work--and police say they had no choice but to charge her with reckless conduct. Dominique Doe left the car running while she went into a Kroger to stock her product on shelves; police say her 6-, 5-, and 1-year-old kids waited about a half hour. The single mom says she spent this month's rent money bailing herself out of jail.
- Minutes before her 2nd-round match at the U-S Open, Venus Williams pulled out of the tournament with news that she's been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes joint pain. The 31-year-old says after years of fighting symptoms, she is happy to finally know what's wrong with her.
"The best thing that could've happened for me this summer was actually to feel worse, so I could get better," she tells Good Morning America.
The disease called Sjogren's Syndrome has no cure; as many as 4 million Americans have it. Williams says she plans to come back to competition as her treatments kick in.
Williams had been diagnosed with sports-related asthma years ago after complaining that she felt she could never get enough air, but she says her medication never really worked. She also suffered symptoms that are typical of Sjogren's--joints painful and changing shape, hands swelling, dry eyes and mouth, and persistent fatigue. - A Department of Corrections probation officer was shot and killed Wednesday during a routine training exercise in Jackson. Another officer's gun apparently went off accidentally.
- For the second time in as many years, an Apple engineer has lost an iPhone prototype--in a bar. The phone turned up for sale on Craigslist but it was expected Apple would remotely "brick" the phone so it can't be used. Apple isn't actually commenting on this, and won't even confirm there is such a thing as an iPhone 5.
- The family of a robbery suspect killed during an attempted holdup of a Cactus Car Wash last fall is suing the business. Their lawyer Julian Sanders explains, "This was not a crime that deserved death." Eight Cactus employees pinned Keary Jackson face-down until he couldn't breathe while they waited for police. The coroner ruled his death homicide, but a grand jury declined to indict anyone.
