Cain Defends Tax Plan; Will & Jada Buy NBA Team; $201K Cell Phone Bill
- The GOP candidates were not on their best behavior last night, and Herman Cain got slammed for his 9-9-9 tax plan. He defended it by saying his opponents "don't understand it" and said that "it does not raise taxes on those that are making the least.'' The 9-9-9 plan includes a 9 percent tax on income, a 9 percent business tax and a 9 percent national sales tax.
But an independent analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank, found that the plan would raise taxes on 84% of households, hitting low- and medium-income homes the hardest. Those making under $20,000 would see taxes go up nearly 950 percent. The rich would get big tax cuts. The study is in line with economic theorists whether on the left or right who note that sales taxes tend to hit low-income families the hardest because they spend more of their income than wealthier families do. - President and First Lady Obama will appear at a military base in Hampton, Virginia, this morning on the final day of his three-day bus tour. They'll be pushing his jobs bill and announcing a plan for private firms to hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses.
- There's a hopeful sign for the housing market. Homes were built in September at the fastest pace in 17 months--and the most since April of 2010.
- Authorities say a 19-year-old killed by a police officer at a MARTA station in Atlanta was shot three times in his chest and back. The coroner says the wounds don't reveal whether Joetavius Stafford was shot on the ground.
- Rapper Soulja Boy posts $10,000 bond after his arrest for drug and weapons charges. His rented Escalade was stopped early Tuesday on I-20 in Carroll County for a bad headlight, and officers found weed and guns inside.
- An ex-Dekalb County cop is sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison after his guilty plea in a corruption case tied to a drug operation. Forty-one-year-old Donald Bristol admitted using the police database to help suspects learn criminal histories, when raids were planned, and whether suspects were wanted by police.
- Some are mad it was made in China; others say the statue doesn't look like him. Now, a new complaint about the King Memorial in Washington--from his niece, Reverend Alveda King, about what she thinks is missing: "I would've loved to see God or Jesus on the wall, and certainly love," she says. But Rev. King hopes that when people visit and learn more about Dr. King, they'll learn more about the God he served.
- The song from his old TV show goes, "In West Philadelphia, born and raised..." Now, Fresh Prince Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith team up with a group of investors to become part-owners of his financially-troubled hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. Negotiations in the NBA lockout continue later this morning, after talks stretched into the overnight hours without a deal between players and owners.
- With weaknesses in performancerevealed by CRCT cheating, the Atlanta school board approves expanded tutoring to help thousands of kids get needed English and math skills for their current grade level. The tutoring begins next month, and some will be available after school and on weekends.
- And you thought your cell phone bill was bad. A Florida woman whose two deaf-mute brothers are on her T-Mobile plan got a bill for a whopping $201,000. Turns out the brothers sent thousands of texts during a two-week stay in Canada and downloaded a bunch of videos. T-Mobile's slashing the bill to $2,500, and giving her six months to pay.
- If you can't get into your area Apple store today but still see workers looking at computers or iPads inside it isn't indifference, it's out of deference. Apple will close its retail stores for several hours today so employees can watch a webcast of a company-wide memorial service to celebrate the life of co-founder Steve Jobs.
- The KISS 104 weather forecast: cloudy, grey skies, with rain diminishing this afternoon. Breezy and cold highs top out in the mid-to-upper 50s.
