MARTA Says Shot Teen Was Armed; Mammograms Every Other Year?

By Veronica Waters

  • A MARTA police officer is on leave after he shot and killed a 19-year-old over the weekend.  Officer Robert Waldo killed Joetavious Stafford as he responded to a report of a fight at the Vine City station. Stafford's brother says he was unarmed; MARTA says witnesss told investigators that was not true.

  • In KISS news about your health:  a new study supports getting mammograms every other year instead of annually.  The study in the Annals of Internal Medicine says annual tests have a downside for many women--namely, that 61% of women get false-positive results.  They return for further testing that then shows they have no cancer at all.  The number of false-positives dropped about 20% with alternate-year screenings.  Screening every other year, as a government task force recommends, drops this false alarm rate to 42% without a big risk of cancer being found at a late stage, the study suggests.  The study doesn't address whether age 40 or age 50 is better to start mammograms.

  • Mayor Kasim Reed is allowing the Occupy Atlanta protesters to remain in Woodruff Park for three more weeks--extending his order that the mini-tent city can stay legally until November 7.

  • Police may have been alerted to a metro Atlanta-wide ring of checkbook thefts.  Shannon Smith found out after leaving the Falcons/Eagles game that her wallet, checkbook and written-down PINs were stolen.  Within a few hours, thieves had managed to steal at least $3,000--but cops say they have indications these crooks are doing this scheme at other banks.  The paper trail could lead to more discoveries.

  • For the second day this week, there'll be no testimony in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor.  Conrad Murray's defense needs time to analyze a new report on the level of sedatives in Jackson's blood.

  • Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's twins will make their TV debut this Friday on ABC's "20-20,'' when the star couple is interviewed by Barbara Walters.  Monroe and Moroccan are now five months old.

  • Halle Berry's stalker should stand trial.  A Los Angeles judge made the ruling in the case of Richard Franco, who was arrested on her property in July after being spotted outside Berry's home for three days in a row.

  • Trying to make amends for massive outages last week, Research In Motion is giving customers some free premium apps and a month of technical support.  The software, worth more than $100, will be available until year's end and includes iSpeech Translator, Bejeweled and Texas Hold'em Poker 2.  Corporate customers also get a month of free tech support.

  • Brought to you by the letter X.   Sesame Street has restored service to its YouTube channel, two days after it was hacked.  The hackers took down the Muppets and put up porn videos, with a sign that said, "Who doesn't like porn kids?"

  • The Warren County Schools Superintendent wants charges filed after a nasty incident following their football win against rival Hancock Central Friday night.  Carole Jean Carey says the losers were quite sore, and that when the Warren players reached the locker room, it was locked--and some Hancock fans and players were there waiting.  Carey says Hancock players started hitting the Warren teens with their helmets and when Coach David Daniels tried to intervene, he was bashed so badly he had to have reconstructive surgery.

  • How are you doing on your credit card payments?  Five of the nation's top six credit card issuers say the number of late payments were up in September. It's the first month in almost three years that so many major companies reported increases, although all were smaller than a percentage point.  Overall, though, consumers are reducing their load of credit card debt.

  • Frustrated commuters circulate a petition to put a stop to the new HOT express lanes on I-85.  Creator Howard Rodgers says not only is it too pricy, but the lanes are doubling commute times for many.  He says the petition has 1,200 names.

  • The KISS 104 weather forecast:  increasing cloudiness; 30%-50% chance of showers from the afternoon to evening; high 78.
