Protesters are beginning the fourth day of the "Occupy Atlanta" demonstrations at Woodruff Park. Talking to the participants finds that those camping out downtown are supporting a range of causes--from abolishing the death penalty, to corporate greed, to just a simple feeling that "the system is broken." Including Atlanta, there are active "Occupy" protests in 250 U. S. cities. The Occupy Wall Street protest near New York's Financial District is going into its fourth week and there's no sign of it ending soon.
A Gwinnett County mother sues the Girl Scouts, claiming discrimination. Angela Johnson says her two daughters were asked to leave their mostly-white troop after a project that highlighted their family's accomplishments in the civil rights movement. The Scouts deny that's the reason they asked the girls not to return, saying that the girls seemed unenthusiastic. They say that this situation in simply a "disagreement between well-intentioned moms." Johnson refused an offer to relocate her girls to another troop.
In KISS news about your health: for the first time since 2008, Americans are making a little progress in the battle of the bulge. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index finds there are now more people listed as "normal" weight than "overweight," but combined, the "overweight" and "obese" make up 60% of the population. The poll found that 36.6 percent of Americans are normal weight, while the number of overweight people came in at 35.8 percent. Obese Americans make up 25.8 percent of the population. The middle-aged, low-income, and blacks are most likely to be carrying extra pounds.
A popular Norcross High School basketball player has been killed in a one-car crash near Ocala, Florida. Police say 17-year-old driver, Darrian George lost control of the Chevrolet Tahoe, killing himself and three other members of his family.
The latest Lundberg Survey shows the average price for a gallon of gas has dropped 13 cents over the last two weeks to $3.42. AAA reports the average price at the pump in Atlanta is $3.23.
The courts in Los Angeles are closed for Columbus Day, but Friday, Dr. Conrad Murray's jurors got to hear from the physician himself--in the interview he did with police two days after Michael Jadckson's death. He said he'd spent months trying to get Jackson through major insomnia, and had been giving him infusions of an anesthetic before realizing Jackson was becoming addicted. The account given by Murray was so detailed and graphic that Jackson's older sister, Rebbie, got up and rushed from the courtroom.
Michael Jackson's 13-year-old daughter says she was "very happy" to take part in the musical tribute to her late father. Paris Jackson appeared briefly alongside her older brother Prince and younger brother, known as Blanket, who called it a "special night." The days leading up to the "Michael Forever'' concert were overshadowed by the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray in Los Angeles and disagreement within the Jackson family over whether it should be held while the trial is going on. Several of Michael's brothers performed, and there was a star-studded list of performances. Among those were Leona Lewis, Christina Aguilera, Gladys Knight, Cee Lo Green, Beyonce', Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo, and La Toya Jackson.
Participants urged fans to ignore the criticism and planning glitches that marked preparations for the show in Wales, and to revel in the celebration of Jackson's musical legacy.
The crowd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium did just that, roaring with approval as Jackson's brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie three-fifths of the original Jackson 5 took the stage to perform Blame It On the Boogie'' with British boyband JLS.
