Cain Gets Secret Service Protection; Tyler Perry Defends Kardashian Casting

By Veronica Waters

  • The Secret Service says Herman Cain is becoming the first Republican presidential contender to receive its protection. The Georgia businessman requested the detail after reporting death threats. June 1, Cain's Stockbridge office got a call from a man who said he was a Ku Klux Klan member who said to tell Cain not to run--and that "there's no such thing as a black Republican."

  • Eight Occupy Atlanta protesters are behind bars, charged with blocking traffic in downtown Atlanta. Six men and two women were arrested Thursday afternoon after they refused repeated commands by APD officers to stop walking on Courtland Street.

  • Congress has approved a big compromise spending bill that averts a weekend government shutdown that neither party wanted. The legislation will keep the government's doors open through December 16th. The Senate approved the measure Thursday night, shortly after the House passed it.

  • Following his arrest on DUI and a host of other charges early Thursday morning, Morrow Police Jeff Baker may face more legal trouble. Because he was in uniform at the time, he may face a felony charge of violating his oath of office. Clayton County Police said Baker had fallen asleep behind the wheel before he was arrested.

  • Heavy D's funeral is today in Mt. Vernon, New York. The rap legend died last week after collapsing outside his Los Angeles home. He was just 44 years old.

  • Another university sports program has been rocked by a child sex-abuse scandal. Amid the focus on Penn State, authorities are investigating a Syracuse University assistant basketball coach on allegations of child molestation some years ago. Assistant coach Bernie Fine is on administrative leave.

  • Tyler Perry is asking his fans for understanding as he faces complaints about casting Kim Kardashian in an upcoming movie. Perry explains he wants a younger cast so he can attract younger viewers. On his website, Perry says he thinks it would be helpful for young people who see her as a role model to "see her in a film that is about what happens in life when you make the wrong choices."

  • One man has pleaded not guilty and another is due in court today in a case reminiscent of the movie "Weekend at Bernie's." Police have accused the men of driving around Denver with a dead friend, running up a bar tab and withdrawing money from the friend's credit card. One man told reporters he thought the friend was passed out drunk.

  • The KISS 104 weather forecast: clear and sunny, with a high of 54; lows tonight, 25-35. Saturday, a mix of sun and clouds, high 61. Sunday expect clouds, high 68.
