Deadly Storms Hit Atlanta; Bishop Eddie Long Settles Lawsuits; Deadbeat Parents May Lose Car Tags

By Veronica Waters

  • Tens of thousands of Georgians are in the dark after a round of strong spring storms that kept emergency responders hopping through the night.  Thursday's stormy weather downed wires and trees, and three people were killed in two separate incidents.

Two women died when a tree fell onto their moving Miata convertible on Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead.  A Mableton teen, 19-year-old Alonzo Daniel, was killed when a tree toppled onto him as he was clearing downed limbs from a driveway.  His grandfather Robert Johnson mourns, "He never did live long enough to drink a beer with his grandfather."

  • "I am not a perfect man, but this thing, I'm gon' fight," said Bishop Eddie Long last September.  Long and his four accusers fought through three months of mediation, and arrived at a settlement on lawsuits accusing the New Birth minister of using trips, money, gifts and Scripture to lure the four young men into sex.  Neither side will discuss terms of the deal, which is presumed to include a lot of money and an agreement not to discuss the facts of the case.  A church spokesman says the settlement "is the most reasonable road for everyone to travel."

  • Deadbeat parents may lose their license plates.  DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James is alerting dozens of parents delinquent at least 60 days on child support that they have 20 days to work out a plan to bring their accounts current, or lose their car tags.  He says if they don't take care of their kids, they don't deserve to drive.

  • Winder Police raid the Flashy-n-Classy clothing store on North Broad Street, seizing $10,000 worth of knock-off Prada, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Coach merchandise as well as pirated CDs.  Store owner Abdoulaye Diallo now faces deportation to Africa, and the FBI is tracking down the store's suppliers.

  • Detectives in Florida say a woman cleaning out the home of a friend who'd killed himself found the body of the man's wife in a freezer.  The condo had been tied up in probate since Allan Dunn's suicide last August, but this week a caretaker got the okay to go inside. A cororner says it appears Dunn's wife, Margaret, died of natural causes 11 years ago.  But the 86-year-old widower had kept her body hidden in the freezer on the back porch since 2000, while he kept cashing her benefits checks.

  • A registered sex offender barred from using the Internet is arrested browsing Facebook in an Apple store.  A deputy who recognized 35-year-old Robert McGuire from a kiddie porn case tailed him into the store and saw him log on to Facebook.  He sidled up and logged on himself--to the Megan's Law website which IDed McGuire and his punishment terms.  Arrested as soon as he walked out of the store, McGuire reportedly admitted to detectives he thought he'd been made--after he saw the guy next to him logged on to the Megan's Law page.

  • Emory University Hospital warns nearly 700 patients that they may have been exposed to tuberculosis. The letters went out this week saying that a hospital staffer tested positive for TB in April, and that anyone in the hospital between February 17 and April 17 may have been exposed.  Emory sent letters to people going back an additional 90 days as a precaution.

  • DUI charges are dropped against Atlanta Braves pitcher Derek Lowe.  One of his lawyers says the trooper who pulled Lowe over in Atlanta April 28 "jumped to a conclusion and made a lot of mistakes" when he assumed Lowe's Porsche was racing a Camaro.  Bubba Head also says the strong odor the cop smelled may have been Lowe's chewing tobacco.  And attorney Cory Yager points out that dashboard video shows while he declined to take a Breathalyzer, Lowe "did remarkably well" on a field sobriety test.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mix of sun and clouds, with a humid high around 82, and lows tonight 56-64.  Saturday:  partly sunny, high 87.  Sunday, partly sunny, high 88.
