It's a wrap! The Oprah Winfrey's finale show is done taping after two phenomenal hours at the United Center stadium in Chicago.
No surprise, there were tears and smiles galore at the "Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular'' event. Tom Hanks hosted the first hour, Will & Jada Pinkett the second.
Aretha Franklin sang "Amazing Grace.'' Maya Angelou did an original work which overviewed Oprah's life, accompanied on piano by Alicia Keys. Also at the star-studded event: Tom Cruise; Halle Berry; Beyonce; Josh Groban and Patti LaBelle; Jamie Foxx and Stevie Wonder singing "Isn't She Lovely;" Queen Latifah, Diane Sawyer, and many more.
There were 13,000 boxes of tissues there--one for each audience member. And Stedman Graham may have prompted some of their usage when he told Winfrey, "I love you for making a difference in my life." He added, "It amazes me that I get to be around a woman who changes people's lives every day and still takes her lunch to work."
The shows air May 23 and 24. The content of the final episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," which will air May 25, remains a closely-guarded secret.
A judge says he'll decide Monday whether to seal several filings and motions in the Dunwoody daycare murder case. Hemy Neuman's lawyers contend pretrial publicity about his alleged affair and the like would taint the jury pool. Within the past week, new court filings have revealed more details of Neuman's jet-setting affair with his alleged victim's wife; the defense also says if they get some evidence excluded it would do little good if jurors have already heard about it in the news.
You've heard the Atlanta Thrashers are close to moving to Winnipeg as their owners, the Atlanta Spirit, are in talks to sell them. Turns out they've got the Hawks up for sale, too. In the thick of negotiations is a San Diego businessman, John Moores, who once was majority owner of the Padres, but more than one buyer has come forward. Key to any deal, though, is that the Hawks stay in Atlanta--so operating rights to Philips Arena will likely part of any agreement. Word is, any deal told is a long way off.
His ultra-conservative politics have Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas ruffling some feathers in Georgia. He is set to speak at the opening of a new Augusta courthouse named for a civil rights leader, John Ruffin, Jr., who was the first black judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals.
During a book signing Tuesday night in Minneapolis, a gay rights protester dumped colorful, glittery confetti on the head of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The man yelled, "Feel the rainbow, Newt!" as he protested efforts against gay marriage in Minnesota. He was quickly swept out by police. Gingrich just brushed off the glitter and remarked that it's "nice to live in a free country."
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office has recovered thousands of items taken in burglaries and is giving possible victims a chance to recover them. DeKalb County may have to raise property taxes as home prices fall faster than estimated. This year's gross tax digest fell by almost 11% as foreclosures on the market have taken a bite out of home prices in DeKalb.
The ways men and women relax are markedly different. A UCLA study finds that while women's stress levels drop when their hubbies help around the house, men relax the most when their wives are doing chores. Researchers measured cortisol, a hormone which increases during stressful times, and found it higher in women when their men sat around, and lower in men when their wives were working around the house. And women tend to do twice as many household chores as their husbands.
The Ball Ground woman who claimed in a 911 call that she had been kidnapped along I-575 is being held on nearly $12,000 bond in the Cherokee County jail on charges of making a false report of a crime and making false statements. A Cherokee Sheriff's lieutenant says Lisa Bode had "numerous personal problems" which prompted her lie.
