A knockoff handbag is one thing; a knockoff smoke detector is another. The Atlanta Fire Department is recalling 18,500 free smoke detectors handed out to residents because the units from a California firm have fake inspection stickers and faulty parts. The detectors will be replaced with certified ones, at no cost to residents. The FBI is investigating; the head of the company that sold them says he didn't know anything was wrong with them.
Just weeks ago, they were said to be close to a settlement. But negotiations have apparently broken down between Bishop Eddie Long and the four young men accusing him luring them into sexual affairs. The judge in the case says he is preparing for a trial that could begin in August or September.
To protect, serve, and advertise. Police cars in the Cherokee County suburb of Holly Springs may soon look kind of like NASCAR vehicles. The police chief has okayed a plan to sell ad space on patrol cars--calling the idea "a no-brainer'' in a time of tight budgets.
Are C-sections fueling the obesityepidemic? Brazilian researchers found that among more than 2,000 23- to 25-year-olds, 15% of those delivered via C-section were obese compared to 10% of those born naturally. They say while they haven't proven a cause and effect, babies who are born via C-section do not get exposed to beneficial bacteria in the birth canal, and so take longer to accumulate certain microbes that help with metabolism. Doctors caution more research is needed before drawing solid conclusions.

But more students flunked the math portion--down to 84% from 91%. The state Department of Education points out it is based on a newer, more rigorous math curriculum and says that the drop was expected.
