Arrests In Armored Car Hits; 'Human Highlight Film' Jumped At Philips; Man Dies After 2 Years In Chair

By Veronica Waters

  • Two men suspected of robbing up to eight armored cars in metro Atlanta are in the Gwinnett County Jail.  Stacey Dooley and Quinton Booker have been charged with three such holdups and could be tied to five more; they were arrested Wednesday when cops spotted them tailing an armored car they allegedly planned to rob.  So far, they have been named in three robberies: two at Mall of Georgia and one on Centreville Highway.

  • Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins is bum-rushed by a man on the court at Philips Arena after the Atlanta Hawks' 85-82 victory over the Orlando Magic Wednesday.  Rashan Michel (right), 36, is a former NBA referee and a former clothing store owner who says Wilkins owes him money for suits he bought years ago--around $13,000.  Michel is charged with one count of simple battery, accused of hitting Wilkins in the chest and punching a security guard.  Wilkins was not seriously injured, and NBA.com's Sekou Smith tweeted that Wilkins got in three "solid" punches during the short scuffle.  The 51-year-old known as the "Human Highlight Film" and one of the best dunkers in NBA history played for the Hawks from 1982-1994, and is now a team vice president and TV analyst.

  • Repeated objections from Democrats and tea party activists stall a vote on a massive Georgia tax overhaul.  They both complain that the plan, which slaps new taxes on a bevy of goods and services, amounts to a tax hike on the middle class while handing wealthier Georgians a break.

  • President Obama has reportedly signed off on CIA assistance in Libya.  Their role will be to help rebels battling Moammar Gadhafi's troops.

  • The federal judge caught buying drugs from an undercover agent after his stripper girlfriend turned informant has gotten orders to report to prison.  Jack Camp begins his 30-day sentence April 15 in Oklahoma.

  • Two armed robbers who hit a CVS on Boulevard in the early morning hours were chased by Atlanta Police until they hit a utility pole on Glenwood near Terry Mill.  One man had to be cut out of the wreckage, and the other was tracked by police dogs after he scrambled out of the wrecked vehicle and ran.  Officers recovered two guns, cash, and cigarettes.

  • Governor Deal's inaugural was cut short in January because of the snow and ice that paralyzed metro Atlanta.  He's rescheduled the party for May 2 at Cobb Galleria, and it's free for everyone.

  • Cobb County school board chair Alison Bartlett is recuperating after a Wednesday morning heart attack. Her daughter called 911 and the 48-year-old was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone.  She's been given angioplasty to widen her blood vessels.  The hospitalization means she'll miss Friday's testimony before a grand jury.  The whole school board's been called before a grand jury over the balanced calendar battle.

  • Play ball!  It's opening day for many major league baseball clubs today, including the Atlanta Braves taking on the Washington Nationals in the nation's capital.  The ceremonial first pitch will not be thrown out by President Obama, but will actually be five pitches thrown simultaneously by the five flag officers representing each branch of the military.

  • The nation's job picture is improving.  Employers cut under 131,000 jobs last month, and a survey of CEOs from America's 200 largest companies shows 52% of them plan to increase hiring over the next six months.

  • A morbidly obese man died after spending two years confined to a living room chair.  The 43-year-old Ohio man's skin had fused to the fabric of the chair; he had bedsores and maggots on him, and human waste under him.  The man's girlfriend fed him by hand.  His landlady says she didn't know how bad off he was because he was always sitting under a blanket.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly cloudy, high ~58, lows in the 40s tonight.
