$50K For Killer's Arrest; Chris Brown Apologizes; Men & Women Regret Differently

By Veronica Waters

  • More than 150 federal, state and local law enforcement personnel are in the manhunt for suspected killer Jamie Hood in Athens.  The person who helps cops slap the cuffs on the 33-year-old ex-con will get a $50,000 reward.  Police think a nephew, known only by his nickname "Little Hood," is helping his uncle hide.

A police report says Hood and a buddy had jumped a man at a house in an apparent robbery, and stuffed him, zip-tied, into a car trunk.  The man escaped and alerted police, who went looking for the suspects.   A traffic stop is when Hood leapt from an SUV, shot Officer Tony Howard, and ran.  When he encountered Officer Buddy Christian--who was actually responding to a different call--Hood allegedly shot him, still sitting in his cruiser.  The funeral for Christian will be 2:00 Sunday.  Officer Tony Howard is still recuperating.

  • Metro Atlanta leads the nation in the number of businesses run by people of color, per capita.  Forbes calls Atlanta "the capital of black America."  Black-owned businesses grew 99% between 2002-2007 and the magazine says it's also a buzzing hive of Hispanic- and Asian-owned businesses.  Baltimore, Nashville, Houston, and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale round out the top five.  Milwaukee is at the very bottom.

  • Chris Brown apologizes for his tantrum at Good Morning America, but claims he was upset because his people sent out talking points ahead of time about his album.  ABC says there were no such notes.  In addition, Robin Roberts says she told Brown during the break before they went on that his past would be part of the interview, and he told her, "Cool."

"I felt like I worked so hard for this music and I love my fans and I love to be able to make positive music, but I felt like people kept just trying to take it away from me,'' Brown told BET's 106 & Park.

GMA says Brown also apologized to the show staff who were shaken by his outburst.  He calls himself "disappointed in my actions."

  • Ex-Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill files will run for his old job in 2012.  He's filed the paperwork and has set up a website urging voters to "bring back the crimefighter."  Hill's first day on the job was controversial; he fired 27 deputies and put snipers on the courthouse roof.  Those deputies later won a $7 million lawsuit judgment.

  • An Austell man faces felony eavesdropping charges for trying to film upskirt videos of a woman at Kmart.  28-year-old Alejandra Ortega was arrested at the Mableton Parkway store; he was spotted tailing a customer and trying to shoot video under her dress.

  • In KISS news about your health:  if you're not getting enough sleep, you tend to eat more.  Researchers found the sleep-deprived typically pack in another 300 calories per day than adults who get enough rest.  Women eat more than men, and choose high-fat eats like fast food or ice cream--and they're too tired to excercise away the extra calories.

  • The NAACP is usually boycotting folks; now a political consultant is protesting the group in Detroit because they've signed singer Kid Rock for its annual fundraiser.  The consultant notes Rock uses the Confederate flag during his concerts.  The head of the Detroit NAACP says Rock isn't racist, and says the singer will talk about the controversy during the May 1 event.

  • Hundreds of would-be jurors converge on an Los Angeles courtroom today as jury selection starts for the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray.  A 29-page 125-item questionnaire is first for the panel.  As for the process from picking the jury to opening statements, lawyers are not likely to even speak to the jury before May 9.

  • An Atlanta truck driver who terrorized women during a four-year crime spree along Fulton Industrial Boulevard has been sentenced to 12 life terms without parole plus 20 years.  From 2005-2009, authorities say, Marvin Martin, 33, coaxed or forced seven women into his vehicle--usually a white 18-wheeler--and raped them.

  • Two people are arrested for stealing bronze vases out of a McDonough cemetery.  The couple had 36 vases--worth $295 apiece--in the back of a pickup when they were pulled over in a traffic stop.  Douglas Guthrie of Winder and Jodi Lynn Fraser of Forest Park are jailed without bond.

  • Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood orders that two air traffic controllers do overnight shifts at Reagan National, after it appears  that a lone controller may have fallen asleep at the controls Tuesday midnight at the Washington airport.  Two jets had to land without clearance because they couldn't raise anyone in the tower, so they contacted an FAA center 40 miles away.

  • Regrets often differ by gender.  Researchers at the University of Illinois and at Northwestern University find women usually express regret about romantic relationships, while men tend to regret something work-related.  People are evenly split on whether they took action or didn't--but the ones who failed to act ended up regretting it much longer.

  • New details are coming out about the failed Christmas 2009 crotch-bombing aboard a US-bound jet.  Anti-terrorism officials say Nigerian Umar Abdulmutallab chose a flight to Detroit because tickets to other cities like Houston or Chicago were too expensive.  His trial is set for fall.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly sunny, high of 65, lows 34-39.
