ATL Mayor Mulls School Board Takeover; Woman Hides 54 Bags Of Heroin In Vagina

By Veronica Waters

  • Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is considering asking the Georgia legislature to grant him power to appoint members to Atlanta's school board for a temporary takeover.  Reed contends the board seems bent on ignoring what's needed to avert crisis after the district was put on probation by SACS in January.  He says the action has has a ripple effect: donations have dropped off drastically, and there's been a spike in the number of applications to private schools.  School board member Reuben McDaniel says they've been doing all they can but understands the question is whether they can make enough progress in a short enough period of time to head off outside intervention.

  • NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor faces sentencing today in New York for sex with a teen.  LT has agreed to a plea deal calling for six years' probation, but he also must register as a sex offender.  Taylor insists he thought the paid prostitute was 19--but she was actually a 16-year-old runaway.

  • A jury of eight women, four men is seated to hear the federal perjury case of Barry Bonds.  The former San Francisco Giants star is accused of lying when he says he never knowingly used steroids.  Legal analysts say perjury is a tough charge to beat--that's the same charge that landed Martha Stewart in prison for a year.  Opening statements are slated for Tuesday, and the judge is already expected to send Bonds' former personal trainer, Greg Anderson, to jail on a contempt charge for the trial's duration if he continues his refusal to testify against Bonds.

  • heroin bags in palm of hand
  • A cavity search in Pennsylvania recovers a crazy amount of contraband.  Karin Mackaliunas, 27, was searched after a car crash, and Scranton police found three bags of heroin in her jacket.  Mackaliunas told them there was more to be discovered--in her vagina.  A doctor performed a search and recovered 54 bags of heroin, 31 empty bags used to package heroin, prescription pills, and $51.22.  In this picture from Parental Underground, typical small packages of heroin are shown.

  • Burrito rage--that's what poppedoff in a Texas Taco Bell.  A San Antonio man was so incensed that the seven beefy crunch burritos he'd ordered had gone up from 99 cents to $1.49, he fired an air gun at an employee--and later shot at cops with an assault rifle.  After a three-hour standoff, police lobbed tear gas into the guy's hotel room and charged him with attempted murder.

  • The Las Vegas prosecutor whohandled the Bruno Mars cocaine case is facing drug charges of his own.  David Schubert, who also handled the Paris Hilton drug case, was arrested over the weekend after buying crack from a street dealer off the Vegas strip.  Mars got probation in his case and will have his conviction scrubbed from his record if he completes it successfully.  Schubert is suspended pending his firing or resignation.

  • Florida State calls foul on two Rockdale County schools.  Salem High and Memorial Middle have received cease-and-desist orders from FSU, saying they have to remove their Seminoles logo.  They can still use the name--but have to have the school name before it.  All told, with changing the gym floors and new uniforms, it'll cost about $200,000.

  • A Craigslist scam leads to a wild car chase in Cobb County.  A couple thought they were getting laptops for their $3,000--but they discovered they had a package full of phone books instead.  The pair decided to chase the scamsters through Cobb until an accomplice of the crooks' rammed their car.  When police saw that, they got in on the chase--and the accomplice ended up plowing down a bystander.  Two suspects in a big black Ford are still at-large.  Police say the couple did the right thing by meeting in a public place, but caution that buyers should check the merchandise before handing over their cash.

  • Now you can go green in luxury; the new Porsche hybrid is ready for order and debuts in November 2013.  The 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid with a V8, 500-HP gas engine and two electric motors--one on each axle.  It does 0-60 in 3.1 seconds, boasts a top speed of 199 MPH, and will go an estimated 78 miles on a tank of gas.  The go-green Porsche costs big green, too, at $845,000.

  • Air fares are going up once again.  This latest round was kicked off by Continental and United.  They are adding $10 to each round-trip domestic flight because of rising fuel costs.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly sunny, with a high of 82.
