Taxes Go Up In Clayton, Cobb; Jaywalking Mom Gets New Trial; Man Lived With Girlfriend's Dead Body

By Veronica Waters

  • Pull out the checkbook.  Tax hikes are going into effect in Cobb and Clayton Counties.  Some were okay with the idea, as it seems there are no more services to really cut; others blasted commissioners for raising taxes during "hard times" and said they would remember the votes when it's time for re-election.  The 17% millage rate hike is the first in more than 20 years.  Clayton County approved a 34% increase to avert a 14-day furlough of workers as it grapples with a $22 million shortfall.  The increases work out to roughly $100 for an average Cobb home, and $440 for an average home in Clayton County.

  • It's 12 months' probation for the jaywalking mom in Cobb County, whose son was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Austell Road last year.  But at the sentencing, the judge offered Raquel Nelson the surprise option of a new trial--and she says she'll go for it.  If she's acquitted this time around, her record will be cleared.

  • A tae kwon do instructor is indicted in DeKalb County on charges that he raped a 9-year-old girl at Power Kicks studio in Lithonia.  Adrian Spellen, 28, is adamant that he is innocent and says he will vigorously fight the accusation.  The alleged attack took place in late May or early June.  The girl told her mother, who took the child to the hospital and called police.

  • Democrats and Republicans are still competing as time runs out to compromise on a deficit cutting measure that also would extend the government's borrowing authority ahead of a possible default August 2.  Five days remain until the deadline to increase the government's debt limit.  Critics say Senate Leader Harry Reid's trillion dollars in war-related savings are phony; the Congressional Budget Office says Speaker John Boehner's plan doesn't cut as much as promised.

  • Prayers in English and Hebrew and the occasional beehive hairdo set the stage for mourners at Amy Winehouse's funeral.  Her father told hundreds of friends and relatives that Amy was off drugs, but still struggled to control her drinking.  Mitch Winehouse said she was playing the drums and singing the night before she passed away, and that he is happy that she died happy.  He says he hopes to set up a foundation in her name to help people beat addiction.

  • The 17-year-old charged with murdering a Clayton County sheriff's deputy earlier this month has had a troubled life.  Jonathan Bun's newly-unsealed juvenile records show he has a rap sheet including charges of burglary and drugs. and was nabbed for armed robbery last January.

  • Was the umpire at Turner Field bleary-eyed at nearly 2:00 a.m., or was it a mercy call to end the longest game in the ballpark's history?   After 19 innings, the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3, but nobody needed an instant replay to see that Julio Lugo was really out at home plate when he ran in from third, even though the umpire called him safe.  The game lasted six hours, 39 minutes and ended at 1:50 this morning.

  • Check your fridge for this major recall:  Pilgrim's Pride is expanding its recall of ready-to-eat chicken to include nuggets sold at Dollar General in Georgia and eight other states.  It may be contaminated with Listeria.  The two-pound bags have a sell-by date of June 2012.  So far, there are no reports of anyone getting sick.

  • Maybe he didn't have insurance?  A California man tried to cut out his own hernia...using a butter knife.  EMTs found the 63-year-old naked in a lawn chair with the knife protruding from his stomach; he'd tried to cauterize it with a lit cigarette.  He's hospitalized under a psychiatric hold.

  • An Arizon man allegedly killed his girlfriend, then lived with her body for more than two months.  The 35-year-old confessed that he had kneed her in the abdomen several times after she admitted being unfaithful--then panicked when she died.  When Erik Grumpelt told his father about it, his father called police.  Officers found Melinda Rava's body wrapped in sheets on the floor of his bedroom, with air fresheners and carpet deodorizers found nearby to mask the odor of decomposition.

  • The KISS 104 weather forecast:  mostly to partly sunny high of 95.
