Cobb Taxes Going Up?; Atlanta's 'Most Powerful'; Bigger Forks=Eating Less

By Veronica Waters

  • The low taxes Cobb County residents brag about may be going up for the first time in years.  Residents get two opportunities to sound off on a proposed millage rate increase today--8:00 a. m. and 6:00 p. m.--as the county commission considers a 17% rate hike.  The increase is being touted as a way to keep all cops on the streets; an anti-tax group says they should make cuts within the county instead.

  • Police investigate dozens more car break-ins in Atlanta.  Overnight,  hit another three dozen vehicles along North Highland and Euclid Avenues, snatching electronics and personal valuables.  Over the weekend, more than 50 cars were burglarized in four complexes in Buckhead--including two gated communities.

  • The Army reservist who was beaten by a man at Cracker Barrel two years ago has now become a defendant herself.  Tasha Hill pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge from last month in which she allegedly barged into the home of a woman in Clayton County, screaming about a man both were dating.  Hill, 37, gets 12 months' probation, community service and must enroll in anger management classes.

  • In KISS news about your kid's health: secondhand smoke may hurt your child's hearing.  Teens around smokers are more likely to suffer hearing problems than those in non-smoking households. Researchers theorize smoking affects blood flow to the inner ear.  This type of sensorineural hearing loss makes it tougher to understand speech and has been linked to disruptive behavior and poorer grades.

  • Police aren't sure now whether the suspect in Friday's midtown shooting was lying in wait for his victim; they say it's not even certain that 22-year-old security guard Nkosi Thandiwe even knew Brittney Watts before he allegedly shot her in the neck and drove off in her car.  His employer, AlliedBarton, says there were never any complaints against Thandiwe, who passed a state background check.  Thandiwe and his family have been in an AJC story about families that exercise together.  His mom is a constitutional lawyer and anti-death penalty advocate.

  • Former USDA Georgia regional director Shirley Sherrod sues conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart.  He posted that video which implied racist behavior by Sherrod against white farmers.  It turns out that the video had been maliciously edited, and a viewing of the full video vindicated Sherrod's name.  Breitbart is claiming he is protected by the First Amendment.

  • Arthur Blank is the most powerful person in Atlanta.  So says a new ranking by Yahoo!, which cites Blank's personality, business investments, successful Falcons ownership and philanthropy as giving him popularity even money can't buy.  Media mogul tyler perry is fourth on the list; Ambassador Andrew Young is 8th, Monica Pearson is 9th, and Mayor Kasim Reed comes in 10th.

  • A Florida teen is accused of posting a Facebook invite for a house party, killing his parents with a hammer and then hosting dozens of people while the adults' bludgeoned bodies were locked in the master bedroom, covered up by towels, books and other household items.  The 17-year-old Tyler Hadley is jailed without bond; cops don't know his motive.

  • In the battle between 178 Atlanta Public School teachers and administrators and Superintendent Errrol Davis to "quit or be fired," many teachers are taking their chances with the system.  So far only one has quit; one other has retired.

  • In KISS news about your diet:  use a bigger fork to eat less.  Researchers in Utah found if they gave customers at an Italian restaurant a larger fork and a heaping plate of pasta, customers ate less than those who got smaller folks.  Seems a smaller fork makes people think they're not getting as much food--and researchers say people rely on visual cues to help decide if they've had enough to eat.

  • Borders is going the way of Blockbuster and Circuit City. The bookseller is seeking court approval to liquidate after it failed to receive any bids that would keep it in business. The chain's 399 remaining stores could close as early as Friday, putting thousands of people out of work. Borders currently has 10,700 employees.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  partly sunny, high of 92.
