She had filed for divorce and wanted to get her life back. But relatives of Irene Mickens say her controlling husband couldn't let that happen. So Jamal Mickens lured her to their Hammond Drive condo Tuesday with word that their daughter was seriously ill. Sandy Springs Police Lt. Steve Rose says that was a lie; the 40-year-old who had an MBA from Emory had dropped off their seven-year-old son and five-year-old daughter at his sister's house in McDonough. Police say Mickens shot his 40-year-old wife, then himself. Their bodies were discovered Wednesday. Mrs. Mickens had filed for divorce twice in the last three years.
Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young says he thinks the Atlanta School System needs an honor code for both teachers and students. "The cheating speaks to the character--and that's where the failure is," he said in an interview with Channel 2 Action News.
If the CRCT cheating proves true, the schools implicated may have to return a total of nearly a million dollars awarded for meeting AYP three years in a row. The grants ranged from a few hundred dollars at some school to more than $99,000 at some.
President Barack Obama is demanding that budget negotiators find common ground on a debt-limit plan by week's end. Wednesday's meeting lasted nearly two hours and apparently found tensions running high. Some say after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor urged the president to accept a short-term extension of the government's borrowing authority, the president walked out saying, "Enough is enough."
Think you can do better on the budget? Try the online game "Budget Hero 2.0.'' But this isn't all fun and games. Moody's is threatening to downgrade the country's Triple-A credit rating, which could increase borrowing costs for the government and businesses.

There's an encouraging sign that the job market may be slowly improving. The government says fewer people sought unemployment benefits last week.
A University of New Mexico football player booted off a US Airways flight for refusing to pull up his sagging PJ bottoms will not be prosecuted. The DA says they have more important things to do. DeShon Marman says he's ecstatic and breathing a sigh of relief. But he also says he may sue. US Airways hasn't reimbursed him for his missed flight. Marman said he couldn't pull up his pants until he'd put away his carry-on.
Why pay for gas when you can steal it? that was apparently the thought of a pair of men who were spotted siphoning gas from vehicles parked in driveways in a Loganville subdivision. Responding to a neighbor's report, a Gwinnett Police officer found eight red gas jugs and a red siphoning hose in the bed of the suspects' pickup truck--but not a lot of gas, because their hose was too short to reach most tanks.
One day after the driver in a Carroll County bus crash was sentenced for last October's death of a 17-year old passenger, a final Georgia State Patrol report says students were afraid to ride on Ken Herringdine's bus. The probe found that students said they saw Herringdine asleep when they boarded the bus, and his own trainer said Herringdine "did not pay attention." Parents of Ray Ray Walker, who died after the bus overturned in a ditch, are furious that Herringdine was sentenced to just probation and a $600 fine.
A Marietta mom could get up to 36 months in prison after being convicted in the vehicular homicide of her four-year-old son. 30-year-old Raquel Nelson didn't run him down herself, but was convicted on charges including crossing roadway elsewhere than at crosswalk and reckless conduct. The driver, Jerry Guy, got a five-year sentence.
