Despite the threat of a lawsuit, the Cherokee County Board of Education voted unanimously to keep holding high school graduation ceremonies at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock. Some Jewish students have not participated in their own commencements because of the venue, but a Christian student who spoke at last night's meeting says that people should be able to put aside their religious differences for one day. A local rabbi who spoke out against the venue last month says while he's not surprised by Thursday's vote, he thinks a threatened lawsuit will just make diversity relations worse if it's actually filed.
After a string of escalating burglaries and sexual assaults dating back to January 1, a crime alert has been issued in Buckhead. Atlanta Police say there are enough similarities among the three crimes in the Lenox Road/Peachtree Park Drive area to suspect that one man is behind them. He's described only as a slim black man about 5'8", wearing all black. Police want women, especially, to be on the alert.
A Maine seafood company recalls cooked, fresh and frozen lobster meat because of listeria contamination. The ready-to-eat lobster is packed under the Portland Shellfish, Claw Island, Craig's All Natural or Inland Ocean brands. Listeria is especially dangerous to pregnant women. You can return the lobster to the store for a full refund. It's the fourth recall by Portland Shellfish in two years, according to the FDA.
A Union County man wins a $404,000 libel award against a woman who spent months smearing his reputation online. Sybil Ballew posted under at least half a dozen Internet aliases, accusing Gene Cooley of being a pervert and longtime criminal. None of it was true. The lies cost him his job, his home, and even a seat at his murdered fiancee's funeral after his future in-laws asked him not to come. Cooley got the writer's IP address from Topix.com, and sued her. In court, Ballew admitted she didn't know Cooley, just said she knew a pervert when she saw one. Cooley sometimes shopped at a business where she worked.
The father of a 14-year-old boy murdered at the Five Points MARTA station on New Year's Day is suing the transit authority. Rueben Hand's father says his son had warned MARTA police that a man was threatening him--but that the officers ignored him.
Emory University officials are expressing regret for the campus' role in slavery in Georgia. The Emory founders used slaves to build and support the college in its early days and were influential in pushing the North/South split in the Methodist Episcopal Church before the Civil War.
An Atlanta man could face a felony charge after the killing of a cat last week on Mallard Street in northwest Atlanta. Brett Wearing allegedly used a stick to knock the cat out of a tree so that his pit bulls could maul it to death. A felony conviction could land Wearing in prison for a year; he has been facing a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum of 60 days in jail if convicted. The Fulton County District Attorney's office will decide whether to up the charge.
A Buford man found passed out--and naked--in a Wal-Mart parking lot Wednesday may have been high on meth. A passerby called police, who found 40-year-old Craig Pickens in a white Volvo, nude from the waist down. His pants and sweater were beside him. When officers managed to wake him up, he wasn't very coherent.

President Barack Obama gets good reviews for being likable, but they're mixed on the first two years of his presidency. A new Associated Press-GfK poll says an overwhelming majority of Americans--83%--like President Obama, but 26% say he's fallen short on carrying out his campaign promises. Half of those surveyed say he deserves a second term; the split is also the same among independents, a crucial part of the electorate. The numbers are similar to what Ronald Reagan saw before he won his second term in the White House.
