New Stadium Talks For Falcons; Ford F-150 Recall; High GPA + SAT=Free College; Woman Attacks Roomie Over Thin Mints

By Veronica Waters

  • The Atlanta Falcons and Georgia World Congress Center Authority will enter into a "memo of understanding.'' It's the next step toward a new, open-air stadium for the NFL team.  Preliminary plans involve a new stadium that will cost about $700 million.  Everyone involved is quick to point out, however, that this is far from a done deal.

  • Should DFaCS caseworkers be involved in car chases?  That's a question being asked by child advocates after one pursuit may have led to a car crash which took a child's life.  The AJC reports that a mother being followed by a Department of Family and Children Services caseworker crashed into a tree in Rabun County last month.  Her two-year-old, Holden Young, died and two children were injured.  DFCS has no guidelines for chases involving caseworkers.  Some observers think the agency following the mother made her tense and reckless.  Others think the DFCS reps were just monitoring where Misty Bleckley was driving until the police they'd called had shown up.  The caseworkers were coming to remove children from Bleckley's care.  They lost sight of her car before she crashed into a tree.

  • Details are out about a proposed overhaul to keep the HOPE scholarship from going broke.  The governor's plan would still send top performers to college for free at Georgia's public universities.  The top performers would be those with at least a 3.7 grade point average and a 1,200 SAT.  For those with a 3.0, HOPE would cover 90% of tuition.  Governor Deal says HOPE is on track to run out of money in 2013.

  • Ford is agreeing to recall nearly 150,000 F-150 pickup trucks to fix airbags that may deploy without warning.  The recall will cover 2005-2006 model years.

  • Alpharetta may ban smokers from lighting up in its parks and along the Greenway.  Parks & Rec proposed no-smoking zones during organized activities--but the mayor and council say going a step further with an all-out ban would make more sense and promote a family-friendly environment.  Marietta and Roswell have already banned smoking in their city parks.

  • And the winner is...Rahm Emanuel.  The former White House chief of staff won 55% of Tuedsay's vote to become Chicago's next mayor.  He's already acknowledging the need for deep budget cuts, as the Windy City's in financial dire straits.  Sen. Carol Moseley Braun got less than 9% of the vote.

  • Those who subscribe to Amazon.com's premium membership just got a gift:  free movies online.  Amazon Prime members, who pay $79 yearly for unlimited free two-day shipping, can now stream thousands of movies and TV shows online--at no cost through the site's on-demand video service.  The move is a threat to Netflix, which charges a monthly fee to stream movies to 20 million subscribers.

  • Hands off the Thin Mints!  A Florida woman woke up her roommate, accused her of eating her Girl Scout cookies--and chased her with a pair of scissors.  Police say 31-year-old Hersha Howard also hit the woman with a board and a sign; she's out on $10,000 bail, charged with aggravated assault & aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.  The roommate says she gave the Thin Mints to Howard's kids.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  partly sunny, high of 65.
