A peaceful Gwinnett County neighborhood is rocked by senseless violence. Police say two baby brothers were stabbed to death Wednesday evening in their Huntington Falls subdivision home. Three-year-old Bradley Garcia and one-year-old Edward Garcia are dead; another three-year-old is hospitalized in critical condition. The boys' father is listed in serious condition.
A neighbor, Lewon Thomas, says the boys' father Elvis Garcia came charging into his garage "with a hole in his chest," holding a cell phone and talking to a 911 operator. Garcia screamed, "He killed my children!" said Thomas, who also told the AJC that Garcia said his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend was responsible. Now, 28-year-old Antonio Cardenas-Rico is jailed without bond on two counts of murder.
In KISS news about your health: diet soda may help your waist but hurt your heart. Researchers in Miami found in a preliminary study that those who drank diet soda every day had a 48% higher risk of a stroke or heart attack compared to those who drink no soda at all. Doctors say they do not know what mechanism may be at work. Other research links both diet and regular soda to a higher risk of diabetes.
A New York Republican congressman resigns after it's found out that he e-mailed shirtless photos of himself to a woman on Craigslist. Chris Lee told the woman he was a divorced lobbyist--neither of which was true. Lee is married and in his second congressional term; he apologized for what he called "profound mistakes."
A peeping Tom is under arrest in Suwanee. 18-year-old Lamar Brayboy-Hayes (right) is accused of secretly videotaping a family friend in her own bathroom. Suwanee Police say the recording had apparently fallen out of Brayboy-Hayes' pocket. Friends found the flash drive in a car, and plugged it into a computer out of curiosity. They were surprised to recognize a neighbor's bathroom on the video that popped up--and the young girl who was taking a shower in it. Hayes faces two felony charges.
The Mississippi NAACP is speaking out against one of the proposed license plates for the Sons of Confederate Veterans there. The plate would feature Nathan Bedford Forrest, who led the 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tennessee. Forrest was also a grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. The NAACP head says the state shouldn't honor an early leader of a terrorist group.
Under the Gold Dome: A House panel has unanimously approved legislation that would allow for a code to be placed on the drivers licenses of felons; the intent is to alert cops that the person they're with has been convicted of certain violent crimes.
Finding hope for HOPE:Georgia lawmakers wrestling to save the HOPE scholarship are dealing with the grim realities that to do so means not as many students will get it, and those who do won't get as much money as those in years past. Options they're considering include raising the qualifying GPA or not paying all the tuition costs.
The DeKalb County district attorney's office is on the case of a $23,000 student fee disappearance at two DeKalb schools. Miller Grove High School para-pro Daphne Miller was fired last month; now an ex-bookkeeper at Stone Mountain High is under investigation. An audit found 12-grand in senior and graduation fees gone from Stone Mountain, and nearly an equal amount missing from the cheerleading fund at Miller Grove.
Are lenders getting more understanding with folks facing foreclosure? Fewer homeowners who don't pay their mortgages are getting warning letters. The firm RealtyTrac says in January, there were fewer homes foreclosed on than there've been in more than three years.
Ticked-off Super Bowl fans file a $5 million class-action suit against the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys and team owner Jerry Jones over that seat snafu during the big game. The NFL has already refunded them for three times the face value of their tickets, plus promised tickets to any future Super Bowl as well as airfare and accomodations.
Get ready to pay more baggage fees: US Airways is raising its fee for checking heavy luggage on its domestic flights from $50 to $90. That's on top of the $25 to check a first bag and $35 for a second bag, which are not changing.
