When brotherly love turns deadly: Police in South Carolina say a 19-year-old died after agreeing to eat the cocaine his big brother had hidden in his buttocks. A cop car's camera caught the conversation. Twenty-two-year-old DeAngelo Mitchell convinced his brother Wayne to eat the hidden coke because, he said, with his long rap sheet he was certain to get a life sentence.
"One of us gotta do it," Mitchell said. "You the only one that don't have no strikes...You my little brother...I'm gonna get life...You gonna unwrap it? Want me to hand you it?" While both men are handcuffed, the younger brother manages to get the cocaine from his brother and eat it, said police.
"You done?" Mitchell asked. "Chew that (expletive)."
It wasn't long before Wayne Mitchell started to show signs something was wrong and DeAngelo Mitchell yelled for help. The teenager died within an hour. Police are looking for the older brother now to charge him with manslaughter.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Gwinnett County Police sweep an apartment complex of dozens of gang members. Suspects were arrested on charges ranging from robbery and drug dealing to murder. An eight-month investigation found that the Gangster Disciples virtually ruled the Bradford Gwinnett apartments, turning it into what an ATF agent called "a rat's nest of thieves." Lookouts on the only entrance/exit of the complex kept tabs on residents' happenings, and neighbors who called police were threatened not to do it again. There were two cliques loosely affiliated with the Gangster Disciples, say police--the "Ninth Ward," who nicknamed themselves after the New Orleans neighborhood, and another group police aren't naming. More arrests are expected.
Atlanta Police hunt an early-morning shooter who left a man in his 30s dead in midtown. The victim was standing on the sidewalk in the 600 block of Parkway Drive between Ponce de Leon and North Avenues just after midnight, when the killer drove up in a black Pontiac Grand Prix and fired multiple shots.
Up to 50 Dougherty County educators may be implicated in a CRCT test cheating scandal, says the Albany Herald. The county and Atlanta Public Schools were flagged for possible cheating after an unusual amount of erasures on the 2009 standardized testing. After state investigators brief school administrators, they will make their findings public. That could happen as early as today.
The parents of drum major Robert Champion say they want to establish a national hotline to report hazing incidents. Pam and Robert G. Champion say they hold no grudges, but want everyone who played a role in their son's death to take responsibility--from the students to the administrators whom they believe knew of the culture of hazing at Florida A&M University. Their 26-year-old son died after he went into shock from internal bleeding after a beating which left "extensive" bruising across his upper body, said the coroner.
A one-time "Real Housewives of Atlanta" regular is arrested for driving on a suspended license. When stylist Dwight Eubanks was pulled over last week at Freedom Parkway and Boulevard for having a headlight out, he told police he didn't have his driver's license on him. A check showed that the license had been suspended. His court date is pending. Eubanks left RHOA last season.
Mayor Kasim Reed announces that the Atlanta Tennis Championships will be played next summer on courts to be constructed at Atlantic Station. The tournament's stadium court, where the top matches are played, will be constructed in the district's Central Park, where a Christmas Tree is currently located. Andy Roddick and former Georgia star John Isner have already committed to the event.
