Sex Offender Sweep; Former Democratic Leader's Suicide; Roddy White Paternity Suit

By Veronica Waters

Keeping kids safe: hours after the accused killer of Jorelys Rivera was denied bond on rape and murder charges, Cherokee County deputies were back on the streets doing a scheduled sweep of registered sex offenders in the county. More than one officer described the little girl's killing as a reminder of why the sweeps are so important. The authorities located 60% of those registered, and most were in compliance. Four, however, were taken into custody for probation violations--possession of either drugs or pornography. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn remains jailed in a cell separate

A footnote to the story of executed inmate Troy Davis: State NAACP president Edward Dubose says Georgia needs to "execute the death penalty itself." He says he promised Davis before his lethal injection that he would fight to abolish the death penalty. Some state lawmakers will propose legislation in the upcoming session to prevent eyewitness testimony from being the sole evidence in a capital punishment case.

The former Democratic leader of the State Senate has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say 61-year-old Robert Brown may have been dead for several days before his body was found with a .32-caliber revolver in his hand. Robert Brown, the first black state senator from Bibb County, worked on the legislative team that created the HOPE scholarship, and is described as a mild-mannered man whose passion was seen in his staunch stance defending working people. Brown ran unsuccessfully to become mayor of Macon last summer. He had been ill recently.

Roddy White's agent has no comment on a TMZ report that the Atlanta Falcons wide receiver has been slapped with a paternity suit from a banker in Georgia. Stacy Hott is seeking child support for her four-month-old son, as well as a life insurance policy that names the boy as beneficiary. The Falcons signed White to a six-year, $48 million deal in 2009.

Florida A&M University's Board of Trustees voted Thursday to publicly reprimand the school's president rather than place him on leave following the death of a band member in what detectives say was an incident related to hazing. Asked after the meeting whether he felt he had dodged a bullet, Dr. James Ammons replied, "I heard the bullet loudly and clearly."

In KISS news about your health: how contagious is that yawn? A new study finds you're more likely to catch a yawn from a close friend or a family member than from a stranger. Italian Researchers found there is a much longer yawn delay if you don't know the yawner. The theory is that empathy is at the root of it. By mimicking the yawn we see, we are more able to understand how tired or maybe even bored the other person is.

As you start breaking out the cookie sheets and Bundt pans for holiday baking--a warning to tell you about: don't eat the cookie dough! The CDC has traced a 2009 E. Coli outbreak which sickened 77 people in 30 states--including Georgia--to raw dough. Dr. Karen Neil says from what they could tell, the outbreak stemmed from the flour. Neil says the findings show that manufacturers should be making ready-to-bake cookie dough as safe as possible to be eaten in raw form.

The KISS 104 weather forecast: variable sun and clouds, high of 57.
