Job Fair At Atlanta Technical; Banks Adding Debit Fees; Hot Sauce Mom On Trial

By Veronica Waters

  • Unemployment ticks up to 10.1% in Georgia in July, two-tenths of a point higher than in June. But for blacks out of work, the numbers are even higher--about 15%, says Congressman John Lewis. Today, he and Rep. Hank Johnson co-host a job fair at Atlanta Technical College until 5:30 p.m. Thousands are expected to turn out to show off their resumes to more than 80 employers.

"It's possible for someone to walk out with a job today," Lewis tells KISS 104.

The congressmen also host a town hall tonight from 6:00-8:00.  Several members of the Congressional Black Caucus are visiting Georgia for the event, too.

  • Buying groceries, gas and stuff with a debit card? Get ready to pay a fee. Starting in October, Wells Fargo is testing out a $3 per month debit card fee.  Regions and SunTrust are also putting monthly debit card fees on some accounts. Banks say they're trying to make up money lost after the Fed capped the fees they could charge retailers.

  • Ex-Atlanta schools superintendent Beverly Hall sends the district a $127,000 bill for her legal fees related to the CRCT scandal. Her contract stipulates APS will cover her legal costs. A grand jury is now investigating the test cheating.

  • Oil giant BP says it is investigating a new sheen in the Gulf of Mexico.  It's been 16 months since an explosion at one of their wells led to the worst offshore spill in American history.  BP says this new sheen is not near any of their existing operations.

  • In KISS news about your health: Does it matter how you reach out and touch someone?  A study out of the University of Wisconsin indicates if you want to make an emotional difference, talking is better than texting.  Researchers observed girls who instant-messaged their moms after something stressful and found their stress hormone stayed as high as if they hadn't had any contact with them at all. Those who heard their mothers' voices on the phone or in person got an increase in the love hormone, and happier feelings.  No word if this applies to dating life, but it may be a good idea for men to call up the woman they like instead of just texting her all day.

  • UGA says tight end Orson Charles has been cleared by the NCAA after being linked to a former Miami booster who told Yahoo! Sports he provided Hurricanes players with hookers, cars and other gifts for 10 years.  Charles was one of the high school players improperly brought to Nevin Shapiro, who tried to woo him to Miami.

  • An Alaska woman is on trial for child abuse after sending a video of her at-home discipline methods to Dr. Phil.  Last year, he played a tape of Jessica Beagley squirting hot sauce in the mouth of her seven-year-old adopted son and then making him stand in a cold shower.  She said it was because he had lied about misbehaving in school.  Viewers contacted police after seeing the tape on TV last November.

  • The KISS 104 weather forecast:  partly cloudy, high near 90.
