- Back to school for several metro districts today, including Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Fayette, and Gwinnett Counties as well as Atlanta and Marietta city schools. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist gave a special prayer for Atlanta kids Sunday. Gwinnett has a new middle school opening today, Moore Middle, and a new online high school launching next week for 160 students.
- A taxi driver with three children is shot and killed in East Point early Sunday. Police are looking for tips in the death of Jack Rainey. Rainey managed to radio in to his dispatcher and alert them after he was shot, but hsi radio went dead after that and it took hours to find him outside Oak Knoll Elementary.
- Our stock portfolios may take a hit when the markets open today, after Standard & Poor's downgraded the USA's credit rating from AAA to AA+. Consumer expert Clark Howard hopes the downgrading is a wake-up call for Washington.
"We as a country have been spending money willy-nilly for a long time that we don't have," says Howard. "And we have to agree as Americans either that we're going to pay more taxes, or government is going to do less than it's promised for us."
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner says S&P's move shows a stunning lack of knowledge about basic budget math. - In KISS news about your health: roll out of bed and smoke? That's a warning sign. Penn State Med School researchers say if that's your habit, you've got a strong one, and the reason it's a warning sign is because it shows your body can't wait to replace the nicotine that wore off during the night. The study finds those kinds of smokers are 80% more likely to develop lung cancer.
- NATO forces work to recover all the wreckage of the Chinook helicopter that went down in Afghanistan over the weekend, killing 38 people. Thirty of them were American troops; 20 of those were from the unit of Navy SEALs who killed bin Laden. The cause of the crash is unknown but the Taliban is trying taking credit.
- A pastor at a Seventh-Day Adventist church is jailed without bond for allegedly soliciting oral sex from a 15-year-old boy. Police said Samuel Chapman, who is 58, also performed a sex act in front of the teenager first. The boy's grandmother reported it to police.
- Big Boi is busted on drug charges in Miami. The 36-year-old Grammy winner Antwan Patten, half of the rap duo OutKast, was arrested Sunday while allegedly in possession of Ecstasy and Viagra.
- New worries for owners of some Ford Mustangs and Volkswagen Jettas. Federal safety investigators probe possible transmission shifting problems in some manual 2011 and 2012 Ford Mustangs, and fuel line leaks in 2011 Volkswagen Jettas.
- Rumors of a possible ticket strike in DeKalb County by police officers upset over holiday pay. An anonymous blog post on a DeKalb Police board urges issuing warnings, not tickets, which would prevent the county from collecting revenue.
- ABC News apologizes for the Nicki Minaj nip slip. She suffered a wardrobe malfunction when the left side of her top flopped open as she sang "Where Dem Girls At" Friday on "Good Morning America."
- Cops can get creative when it comes to tracking down those who don't pay child support. The sheriff's office in Lee County, Alabama, recently send out letters promising free football tickets to people. When they showed up and showed ID, deputies hauled them off to jail. The dozen or so who were arrested owed a total of about $270,000 in back child support.
- No word yet on the price, but the sale of the Atlanta Hawks and their home stadium Philips Arena appears to be almost wrapped up. LA businessman Alex Muruelo would become the NBA's first Hispanic majority owner if the deal is approved. A press conference is set for today. Since Philips is part of the sale, the Hawks would stay in Atlanta.
- The KISS 104 weather forecast: partly cloudy, highs in the low to mid-90s, with a 30% chance of afternoon or evening showers.
