House Votes For Debt Deal; Jonesboro Considers Saggy Pants Law; Kilpatrick Released From Prison

By Veronica Waters

  • There were cheers and hugs on the House floor as lawmakers voted on the historic debt-limit bill...not because the bill was finally up for a vote, but because Congresswoman Gabby Giffords showed up to cast her first vote since being shot in the head in January.  With just minutes remaining on the vote, the 41-year-old Arizona lawmaker walked into the chamber, stunning her colleagues, who erupted into applause.  Some appeared to be crying as they hugged her.

The House passed the measure.  Now, there are just hours left before the nation's debt exceeds what it can borrow.  But the Senate plans to vote this afternoon on raising the debt limit, and President Barack Obama says he'll then sign the bill.

  • Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick walked out of prison today after 14 months for violating probation in a 2008 criminal case.  A relative escorted him to a waiting vehicle shortly after 6:00 this morning; he smiled at reporters but didn't stop to give any statements.  The 41-year-old had pleaded guilty to obstruction; a judge found that he had lied  in a civil trial about an extramarital affair.  Even though Kilpatrick is free on parole, he faces a federal corruption trial that could send him back to prison. Kilpatrick says he'll talk openly about his prison time once he's reunited with his family.

  • A would-be home invasion victim turns the tables on the crooks in Clayton County.  They burst into a unit at the Stone Brook Apartments on Riverdale Road, demanding money and drugs.  The resident instead opened fire, shooting one of the two men in the abdomen and buttocks.  Police followed the blood trail to find the wounded man; his partner is on the run.  No word whether there were actually any drugs in the apartment.

  • A team from the accrediting agency SACS comes to check up on Atlanta Public Schools next month to see if the system should be fully accredited again.  Atlanta was placed on probation in January because of the squabbling school board.

  • Birth control is the most common drug prescribed to women.  The Obama administration is revamping the way health insurance covers it, announcing that there will no longer be copays for birth control because it is a preventive drug.  Also included in the new rules are services ranging from breast pumps for new mothers to counseling on domestic violence to an annual "well woman" physical.  The sweeping changes take effect January 1, 2013.

  • A nursing mom in Ohio gets probation and a $200 fine for spraying arresting deputies with breast milk.   Thirty-year-old Stephanie Robinette pleaded guilty to assault and obstruction; she was apparently tipsy when cops tried to pull her out of a car after a June wedding, and she yanked up her shirt and spritzed them with breast milk.  Her lawyer says she's humiliated by the incident and seeking treatment.
  • Pants on the ground?  Not in his town, says Jonesboro Mayor Luther Maddox, who is backing a proposal to make saggy pants a cae of disorderly conduct.  The city council votes next week.  Maddox says people driving down the street don't want to look at people's underwear.

  • A New Jersey woman is accused of offering more than just lattes and Munchkins on the job at Dunkin Donuts.  Police say the 29-year-old faces prostitution charges because she was taking breaks to have sex with customers in their cars for money.  "Operation Extra Sugar" was launched after police got a tip.

  • UGA loses its #1 title--but school officials probably will be happy about this one.  Ohio University is now ranked the #1 Party School by Princeton Review, edging Georgia down to #2.  Ole Miss, Iowa and Cal-Santa Barbara round out the top 5.  For the 14th year in a row, Brigham Young in Utah was named the most stone-cold sober campus in America.

  • Hartsfield-Jackson is working to launch a program to give you frequent flyer miles while you're still at the airport.  In an effort to compete with off-site lots, Hartsfield-Jackson is putting together a plan offering rewards for parking or eating a meal at the airport.  Delta, United, Continental and Alaska are among the airlines signed up.  If approved, the airport rewards start next month.

  • Tropical Storm Emily has its sights set on Puerto Rico, which could be hit with six inches of rain today.

  • In KISS news about your health:   a little exercise can go a long way.  Harvard researchers found 2.5 hours of moderate exercise a week cut your risk of heart disease by 14%.  The study found even people who got less than the recommended amount of 300 minutes of exercise a week showed the benefit.  Plus, the more exercise you get, the more your risk of heart disease goes down.

  • miles morales as spiderman
  • Spider-Man is back in half-black.  The new Spider-Man on the Marvel Comics block is a half-black, half-Hispanic teenager named Miles Morales, who takes over the job after Peter Parker's death in Ultimate Spider-Man issue #160.  In the regular Marvel line, Parker still lives; the Ultimate line was launched in 2000 to tell more contemporary stories in a kind of parallel universe.

The newest issue of Ultimate Fallout is out today.  Morales' first appearance shows him breaking up a fight, but with the September re-launch of Ultimate Spider-Man, readers get to find out how he got his powers, and learn about the different abilities he also has.  Alex Alonso, Marvel's editor-in-chief, was quoted as saying, "What you have is a Spider-Man for the 21st century who's reflective of our culture and diversity."

  • The KISS 104 weather forecast:  hazy sunshine, humid high of 95.
