Cracker Barrel Trial Starting; Mom Of 'Sex Addict' Sues Tyra Banks Over TV Appearance; Facebook Security Breach

By Veronica Waters

  • The south Georgia man accused of beating an Army reservist outside a Cracker Barrel last fall goes on trial today in Clayton County.  Witnesses say Troy West beat and kicked Tasha Hill and screamed racial slurs at her--all while her young daughter watched--after she told him to "be careful" for almost hitting the little girl with the restaurant door.

  • A McDonough mother sues Tyra Banks, claiming her 15-year-old daughter appeared on Tyra's TV talk show without permission.  Beverly McClendon is seeking $3 million in damages.  She says after the teen responded to an online casting call seeking teenage sex addicts, the girl was picked up in a limo, flown to New York and put up in a hotel, and then taped the show before her mother even knew anything about it.  McClendon says her teen is damaged because "deviants, perverts and pedophiles" likely watched the show.

  • TI is set to surrender to federal authorities November 1.  An Atlanta judge says he'll serve 11 months in prison for violating probation following his arrest and positive drug test last month in Los Angeles.  His lawyers say TI's addicted to weed, but U. S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates says addiction or not, the plea deal he entered--which included the bulk of 1,000 hours community service before he went behind bars--meant that TI was the government's ambassador to tell youths about the dangers of drugs and weapons, and now he has to pay the consequences for breaking the law.  Judge Charles Pannell also said TI "dumped smut" on an experimental lighter sentence that the judge said he'd hoped would've blazed a trail for others following in TI's footsteps.

  • Facebook is promising to fix a securitybreach which transmits the personal information of tens of millions of users to dozens of advertisers and Internet tracking sites.  The security flaw is in some of Facebook's most popular applications, including FarmVille,  Mafia Wars, Quiz Planet and Texas Hold 'Em Poker. The Wall Street Journal reports in some cases, not only users' identifying information is passed along to data miners--but the users' Facebook friends' names are, too.  The apps are written by third-party developers.  Facebook says it has shut down the apps which violated its rules.

  • "Mr. and Mrs. Beatz" are the proud parents of a baby boy.  Alicia Keys gave birth to her first child, Egypt Daoud Dean, last Thursday night.  It's her husband's fourth child.  Keys and Swizz Beatz (real name Kaseem Dean) were married July 31.  Sunday on Twitter, the 29-year-old new mom tweeted, "There is no word to properly describe LOVE, to describe BLISS, to a express a FEELING like this!!!"

  • The AirTran/Southwest merger means the end of Business Class on AirTran.  Southwest has never had first-class seating, and those seats will be phased out once the merger is completed next year.

  • There's new evidence of the so-called"enthusiasm gap" between Democrats and Republicans as the midterm elections approach.  Among the people surveyed who voted for President Obama two years ago, just half say they'll definitely show up this time.  But two-thirds of those who voted for John McCain say they're sure they'll vote.  A new AP-Knowledge Networks poll suggests dissatisfaction with politics in general, too.  About a quarter of people who voted for Mr. Obama say they're thinking of voting Republican, and the same number who voted for John McCain say they're thinking of voting Democrat this time around.

  • The ABCs of CPR are changing.  Instead of Airway-Breathing-Compression, the American Heart Association now recommends compressions first--then clearing the airway, then mouth-to-mouth.  Doctors say hands-first is easier for untrained bystanders, and a recent study found more survivors who'd had hands-only CPR.  Think of the Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive," and press to that beat--at least 100 times a minute.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  sunny, with a high near 80.
