Rapper TI Talks Down Suicidal Jumper (POLL); Deputy Accused Of Shoplifting; Sexting? There's An App For Stopping That

By Veronica Waters

  • If he can rap persuasively to the judge like he talked to this would-be jumper, maybe TI can avoid going back to prison.  The hip-hop megastar says he was on his way to shoot a video when he heard that a man was threatening to jump from the roof of Colony Square.  TI says he didn't think about it Wednesday--he just felt like he needed to go there, so he drove over and offered police his assistance.

  • The man got cellphone video proof from Atlanta Police that TI was on the scene, and agreed to come down and talk to the rapper.

"First of all, I was like, 'What's wrong?'" TI tells WSB Radio.  "He was like, 'Everything.'  He just seemed to be depressed.  Like, he lost his job and just life.  He just looked like life had been beating him up, you know?  And I was like, 'Listen man, no matter how bad it may seem right now, it gets better.  It get better.  And you know I know.'  And he was like, 'Yeah, yeah, you right.'"

The Grammy-winner and actor--real name Clifford Harris, Jr.--seemed at a loss for words when WSB Radio told him how Atlanta Police were impressed with what he'd done and were sending along their thanks.  TI said, he thanks the police for what they do every day.

"I felt it was just a blessing," said TI.  "Everybody's congratulating me and patting me on the back, I'm telling 'em straight up, man, God did all the work.  I just showed up.  This isn't anything that I could've ever planned, that I could've orchestrated, or that I could've conceivably done myself.  I--I was just put in a position to help somebody, and I'm happy that it was able to be resolved in a positive light."

The 30-year-old rapper/actor is due in Atlanta's federal court Friday to explain to a judge why he shouldn't return to prison for a probation violation.  He and his wife "Tiny" Cottles were arrested on drug possession charges last month in west Hollywood, and deputies in Los Angeles said TI tested positive for opiates.

  • A veteran Fulton County sheriff's deputy is nabbed for sticky fingers in the store.  Dunwoody Police say Lt. Reginald Phillips was arrested Wednesday for shoplifting a $50 bottle of cologne from a Marshall's near Perimeter Mall.  Phillips has been with the department for 25 years.

  • Sexting?  There's an app for stopping that.  Apple has patented technology that would let parents keep teens from sending sexual text messages.  The app would censor questionable words from text messages, but it wouldn't block racy photos.  The technology's not yet on the market.

  • The ex-treasurer of a Cobb County high school booster club has been charged with boosting the group's finances.  Police charged Patti Rose with writing dozens of checks from accounts of the Wheeler High Cheeleading Association, to the tune of $27,000, all for personal use.  An investigation was launched when the booster club started the school year $4,000 in the hole.

  • Thursday night live!  30 Rock is broadcasting tonight's episode live, and NBC veteran actor Tracy Morgan can hardly wait.  He says after seven years on Saturday Night Live, he loves being live--and he jokingly suggests the censors get ready with their fingers on the delay button.  The cast will perform the episode twice--once for the East Coast, then a second time for West Coast viewers.

  • They're all safe.  Thirty-three Chilean miners probably just got their first good night's sleep in 69 days.  They were all pulled to the surface safely in a 24-hour operation that ended last night just before 9:00 Eastern.   Doctors will watch closely to make sure their mental health isn't jeopardized by their instant celebrity.  Still up in the air:  the health of 50-year-old miner Johnny Barrios Rojas, who had two women waiting on the surface--his wife of 28 years, and his mistress of four.  The mistress was the one who met him when he came up.

  • Delta's baggage handlers today begin voting on whether to unionize; it's one of the after-effects of the Northwest merger.  Flight attendants, stock clerks and customer service reps are also going to have union votes.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  variable clouds and sunshine, with a high near 72.
