Murder Vic's Phone, ID Found In Stolen SUV; Teachers Confess To Cheating; Almost All Bailout Money Paid Back

By Veronica Waters

  • Atlanta Police detectives are working to connect a suspect jailed on a probation violation to the murder last week of a man in Virginia Highlands.  The suspect was seen on security video riding in a stolen SUV that was later found abandoned at the Lakewood MARTA station.  The victim's ID and cellphone were found inside the SUV.  Charles Boyer was shot to death when he and his girlfriend ran from some masked robbers a week ago Monday.  The SUV matches the getaway car described in similar armed robberies.

  • When it happened, people asked how a sister could have done that to her own little brother.  Fulton County prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against 29-year-old Sabrina Powell and her boyfriend Omar Pitts in connection with the child cruelty murder of 12-year-old Jaytavious Mahone.  He was forced to stand outside in the June heat while holding a bucket of paint, and witnesses say when he collapsed, Pitts kicked him in the head several times.  A third suspect is also charged.

  • The Fulton County School system is promising to pull students from class if their parents or guardians cannot prove they live in the county.  About 10% of Fulton County's student population hasn't provided proof of residency.  They've got until Christmas week to do it.
  • An Atlanta man goes on trial today for shooting two men who were repossessing his Mustang last year.  Justin Moore, 30, claimed then he thought the men were stealing it.  One of the repo men died; the other was seriously wounded.
  • Criminal charges may be the next chapter in the Atlanta Public Schools' cheating scandal.  The AJC reports that in a Monday briefing, the GBI and special investigators informed Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard that a number of school employees have confessed to changing students' answers on the tests.  Some administrators could face charges of covering up the test tinkering.
  • Two statewide runoffs will be decided on Tuesday and voter turnout is expected to be in the single digits.  Georgia Supreme Court Justice David Nahmias faces a challenge from Lawrenceville family law attorney Tammy Lynn Adkins while two other attorneys are vying for a vacant seat on the Georgia Court of Appeals.  Other local contests will also be on the ballot.  Need a ride to the polls?  Call 404.653.1199.

  • The $700 billion financial rescue is actually costing taxpayers a fraction of that amount. Congress' independent budget agency says taxpayers are on the hook for $25 billion. The Congressional Budget Office says that represents unrecovered money spent to bail out insurance giant American International Group and automakers Chrysler and GM.

Cyber Monday 2010 easily topped last year's record for online Christmas sales.  The latest numbers show sales are running 15% ahead of 2009's pace and could top $1 billion dollars.

  • A congressman calls WikiLeaks a terrorist organization, and Attorney General Eric Holder is launching a criminal investigation after the online whistleblower's latest release of thousands of classified state documents.  The Pentagon is introducing new security measures, including restrictions on flash drives to make it harder to copy and reveal a bulk of secrets.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  cloudy skies and showers, possibly strong thunderstorms during the midday, with highs 59-66.
