C-TRAN's End Of The Road; Jury's Out In 'Dirty Dancing' Case; Janet Jackson At Essence Fest

By Veronica Waters

  • It's the end of the road for C-TRAN.  Clayton County's bus service ends at 11:59 tonight after a 4-1 county commission vote to shut it down because of lack of funding.  That leaves up to 8,000 regular riders stranded, in fear of losing their jobs, missing classes and doctor's appointments because they depend on mass transit.  State Senator Emanual Jones is urging fellow lawmakers under the Gold Dome to support sending a penny sales tax referendum to Clayton County voters in July.  The money would fund MARTA expansion to the county.

  • Jury deliberations continue today in the so-called "dirty dancing" trial in DeKalb...in which a fired high school teacher is accused of allegedly allowing teen boys to peform a raunchy dance in chorus class.  Nathan Grigsby says he stopped the performance as soon as he saw it.  Grigsby could lose his teaching license and face jail time if convicted of contributing to the depravity of minors.

  • A state House Republican introduces a resolution to impeach Attorney General Thurbert Baker for his refusal to file suit over health care reform like the governor asked.  Rep. Mark Hatfield has 30 co-signers on the resolution.  Baker stands by his decision, saying the lawsuit has no legal merit.

  • The Big Easy will be a Rhythm Nation this summer.  Janet Jackson just got signed as a co-headliner for the Essence Musical Festival, on the marquee with Alicia Keys and Mary J Blige.  Janet takes the stage July 2, the opening night in New Orleans.

  • A tree-trimming bully is arrested in Gwinnett County.  Police say 29-year-old Gerald Davis and a couple of guys performed the yard work over the elderly homeowner's objections--then intimidated him into writing them a check for $3500!  Davis is charged with robbery and elder abuse.

  • Attention, K-Mart shoppers!  That "blue light special" in Gwinnett County was police making a sex bust.  Cops say they moved in after getting reports of men hooking up in the restroom of the K-Mart on Buford Highway.  After an online sting, they arrested 56-year-old Jerry Lane Casper of Duluth, 37-year-old Alejandro Dearo of Dacula, and 44-year-old Kenneth David Butler of Buford.

  • Forget simply betting on Tiger Woods to win the Masters. British bookies are taking wagers on whether Tiger will kiss a mysterious blonde before tee-off, or on whether his first shot will hit a tree.  Tiger returns to competition at Augusta National next month.

  • Senator Johnny Isakson is back in the hospital.  The 61-year-old is at Piedmont with a blood clot in his leg and an irregular heartbeat.  They found the problem when Isakson went in for a progress check after his hospitalization for a bacterial infection last week.

  • He talked about it in his State of the Union; now, President Barack Obama is set to reverse a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling.  The president will allow it 50 miles off Virginia's shorelines.  At the same time, he's rejecting some new drilling sites that had been planned in Alaska.

The president and first lady will also speak today at a White House forum aimed at finding ways to make workplaces more flexible for famillies.  Earlier this year he laid out initiatives to help the middle class, including child and elder care.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  sunny, with a high of 76.
