In KISS news about your health: running on empty may be okay. New research is the latest one to indicate it's better to exercise on an empty stomach. Belgium researchers say the body burns more fat if you're low on food. When adrenaline is high and insulin is low, muscles can break down more fatty acids. Muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates, which is why some competitors carb-load before a race. But scientists say if you haven't eaten before exercising, your body doesn't have a lot of carbs in reserve, forcing it to burn fat instead. Still, it's not all so simple. One obesity expert points out that the fat burned is within the muscle--so it doesn't make much difference for people trying to lose weight. Other doctors point out you might burn fat faster but you won't do the exercises that well without enough energy--plus, your body needs fuel to recover from workouts.
