Roof Caves At Hobby Lobby; Sex Offender Living Restrictions Lifted; One Mom, Two Babies, Two Due Dates

By Veronica Waters

  • Company officials will begin assessing the damage in earnest today at the Hobby Lobby store in Cartersville.  Storms brought two to three inches of rain to the area Sunday, and a downburst is blamed for collapsing the roof of the store in the Market Square Shopping Center.  A sprinkler line then broke, flooding the store with a few inches of water.  No one was hurt; the store is closed on Sundays so employees can attend church.

  • Two 16-year-old Hall County girls are in serious trouble for a series of 911 calls reporting phony emergencies.  The girls allegedly made a dozen prank 911 calls over four hours, reporting everything from kids trapped in a house fire to a jail escape.  Police traced the calls to a cell phone at the Hog Mountain Sports Complex in Flowery Branch; several of the addresses they gave were near the complex, and cops think the girls got their jollies watching all the cops and firefighters respond.

  • A series of legal challenges prompts Georgia to revamp its sex offender law.  The law had banned all sex offenders from living or working within 1,000 feet of areas where kids congregate, like schools or parks.  It's now been changed to apply only to those 5,000 or so who committed their crimes after June 4, 2003.  The change means some 13,000 registered sex offenders in Georgia can now live wherever they want.

  • The economy is growing.  The National Association for Business Economics also reports that more businesses are hiring and fewer are firing.  In the second quarter, 31% of businesses added workers; that's the highest level in three years.  Also, 39% plan to add to payroll over the next six months.

  • Apple is offering a way to ease the so-called "death grip'' some users have been putting on their new iPhone 4s. The company says it will give free Bumper cases to buyers, and rebates to those who've already bought the cases.  Apple's also offering refunds to those who want to return their new iPhones.

  • One of the hottest matinees on Broadway turned out to be a bone marrow drive for a child star.  Nearly 400 people turned out Sunday to register as potential donors for 11-year-old Shannon Tavarez, who played Young Nala the cub in "The Lion King" for seven months until she was diagnosed with leukemia in April.

  • Dr. Mom could be giving the flu shots one day.  Researchers say eventual in-home flu shots could be one benefit of a new method of vaccine delivery they're working on.  The patches have tiny microneedles so small they can't be felt.  They barely penetrate the skin before they dissolve and release their vaccine.

  • A Utah woman is expecting two babies.  No, they're not quite twins--they're due at different times.  The 34-year-old mother of two has two uteruses--and each has a growing baby.  Their due dates are about a week apart.  This didn't happen with either of her previous pregnancies; she's about 20 weeks along.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  some clouds, some sunshine, with a steamy high around 90 and a 40% chance of afternoon or evening showers or thunderstorms.
