TN Amber Alert Babynapper May Head to GA; New Weight Loss Drug Shows Promise And Side Effects

By Veronica Waters

Police in Tennessee say a man who snatched a baby from his mother may be on the way to metro Atlanta; the FDA is previewing some new weight loss drugs; Michael Vick's probation officer kept him from showing up at his celebrity golf tournament in Georgia this weekend.  Get details on today's KISS News Now!

  • An Amber Alert for a missing Tennessee baby stretches into Georgia.  Authorities say seven-month-old Drake Boyd is black, about 20 pounds, and last seen in Toy Story pajamas.  Police are  looking for 35-year-old David Jackson and three women who allegedly helped him snatch the boy after a violent confrontation with the boy's mother Sunday afternoon.  The suspects may be in a silver Dodge Intrepid with Tennessee tags, or a white Chrysler Sebring with Florida plates.  Jackson reportedly has ties to Newnan, Georgia and authorities think he could be headed to metro Atlanta.

  • No injuries are reported after a Sunday fire at Six Flags White Water.  The blaze broke out in a maintenance building that stores inner tubes near the wave pool, and thousands of visitors were evacuated.  The park is closed until the cause of the fire is known; customers were given vouchers for a return visit.

  • Michael Vick was a no-show at his own celebrity golf tournament Sunday in Atlanta--and you can blame his probation officer.  A Virginia prosecutor said even though Vick (shown here at the party in June) was not involved in the shooting at his 30th birthday bash last month, he was in a confrontation before it--and his probation officer, who has to green light all of Vick's travel, said no to the Atlanta trip.  The injured man is one of Vick's dogfighting case codefendants.  Vick's lawyer says Quanis Phillips was not invited to the party.

Terance Mathis played on the Atlanta Falcons team with Vick, and competed in the Michael Vick Celebrity Golf Tournament.  Mathis said while disappointed Vick couldn't be there, he had a lot of respect for the Eagles' quarterback's charitable efforts, saying, "He's still doing a great thing, trying to raise money for charities and help the community,'' said the former NFL wide receiver. "It's an unfortunate thing that happened, and when that happens, law enforcement does what they have to do. But it doesn't change how I feel about the guy and what he's trying to accomplish.''

  • More pills to fight the fat.  The FDA is reviewing the first in a trio of new weight loss drugs this week.  The Food & Drug Administration today posts findngs about Qnexa.  Clinical trials of Qnexa showed patients losing up to 15% of their body weight--but it also had a high rate of dropouts due to side effects like memory and concentration problems.

  • Scientists report progress in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.  Recent research shows getting enough exercise and vitamin D may lower a person's risk of dementia.  Also, men and women over age 65 who regularly drank tea were 37% less likely to develop Alzheimer's symptoms than non-tea drinkers; coffee had a similar effect, but they had to drink more of it.

  • Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony and actress LaLa Vazquez tie the knot in a Saturday-night ceremony in Manhattan.  The 26-year-old Anthony and 30-year-old Vazquez were escorted down the aisle by their three-year-old son.

  • A Jonesboro woman is recovering at Grady Hospital after a shooting outside her home.  The gunfire may have come after a rent dispute.  A woman living in the home was throwing a birthday party Sunday night and was dancing outside, when eyewitnesses report a red Honda Civic driving down Maggie Lane with gunfire coming from the car.  The woman was shot several times.  Police suspect the woman's former roommate, who was tossed out for not paying rent.  The roommate had reportedly threatened the victim several times.

  • Tough economic times take their toll on credit scores.  FICO, Inc. says more than 25% of consumers now have poor scores of 599 or below.  Historically, that level is just 15%.  Less access to credit could be slowing the economic recovery.  FICO also says the numbers of those with scores above 800 has also risen in recent years.

  • Two Georgia Bulldogs are suspended by coach Mark Richt after their arrests on alcohol-related charges.  Sophomore tailback Dontavius Jackson was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident early Saturday; he's out for at least six games.  Sophomore split end Tavarres King is charged with underage possession and is suspended for at least one game.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: partly to mostly cloudy, with a 60% chance of pop-up showers and a high near 88.
