Two Killed In Cobb Penske Shooting Spree; Earthquake Devastates Haiti; Text Donations To Help Haiti

By Veronica Waters

A disgruntled former worker of Penske is charged with gunning down five at his old workplace; up to three million people--a third of Haiti's population--may be affected by the country's most severe earthquake in centuries.  Get details on today's KISS News Now!

  • An ex-employee dressed in camoflage is charged with killing two men, and critically wounding three others, at a Kennesaw Penske Truck Rental Tuesday afternoon.  Penske says 60-year-old Jesse James Warren was laid off five months ago; his motive for the shootings isn't known.  Cobb County Police say Warren first confronted someone in the parking lot before moving through the first-floor truck bay, shooting as he went, before hopping back in his red pickup.  He was arrested a mile away.

  • The capital of Haiti is in ruins after a massive 7.0 earthquake, its strongest temblor in 200 years.  Preliminary reports say many of the dead are lying among hundreds, if not thousands, of collapsed buildings in Port-au-Prince.  Untold numbers of the injured are trapped or sitting in the streets pleading for doctors, but a doctor says the hospitals are overloaded.  The Haitian Ambassador to the US, Raymond Alcide Joseph, says the first lady is pleading for a medical ship off Port-Au-Prince.

President Obama told his national security staff he expects an aggressive assistance effort. Teams from the Defense, State and Homeland Security Departments are coordinating to help victims.

A young American aide worker says he dug for an hour to rescue his wife and her co-worker trapped under about a foot of concrete after the quake. Frank Thorp says he saw her hand underneath and heard her telling him to keep it together and just get her out.

Haiti native Wyclef Jean is asking everyone, from citizens to the United States Congress, to help.  He says to make a $5.00 donation, text YELE to 501501.  The $5 will go toward his Yele Hait Foundation, and be charged to your phone. The International Red Cross says a third of Haiti's 9 million people may need emergency aid. The United Nations says Haiti's main airport is "fully operational,'' and that relief flights will begin today. The American Red Cross has an extensive partnership with the Haitian Red Cross, which is expected to lead the Red Cross response to the earthquake. The American Red Cross has already pledged an initial $200,000 to help those impacted by the quake, and made available all its disaster relief supplies from its Panama warehouse--enough to help 5,000 families. • Clayton County's school board unanimously fires a Mundy's Mill High School teacher who allegedly put out a $50 hit on an 11th-grader he had questioned about whether he was gay.  Randolph Forde still insists it was just a joke.  The teen has since transferred to another school.

  • An Atlanta man faces molestation and sodomy charges for having sex with a 14-year-old Rockdale County girl.  Deputies say they caught 31-year-old Kenneth Bernard Williams jumping from the teen's second-floor window, carrying six condoms, after the girl's mom called 911 to say she heard footsteps in her daughter's room.  She says the girl has sneaked boys inside before.  The teen told police she'd met Williams a few months ago--after he'd dialed a wrong number.

  • A woman caught on video trashing a Missouri McDonald's is now in custody on a felony property damage charge.  Kansas City Police were flooded with tips on the video showing a 19-year-old knocking over cash registers and throwing a water dispenser over the counter. She was angry that her cheeseburger was prepared wrong and staffers were only offering her a replacement, not a refund.

  • A suspected serial burglar surrenders in DeKalb County.  Todd Thompson may be responsible for 20 break-ins along East Ponce.  His getaway vehicle is a bike.  Homeowners say he raided the fridge and left his snacks litter around their houses as he was stealing.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  sunny Wednesday, with a high around 46.
