Man Died Protecting Female Co-Workers; '30 Rock' Star Gets New Kidney; Social Security Phasing Out Checks

By Veronica Waters

DeKalb Police say a man killed at a restaurant was trying to protect his coworkers, and a relative says that was his character; the star of NBC's "30 Rock" is recovering after a kidney transplant; if you get Social Security, the check won't be in the mail soon--they're going paperless.  Details on today's KISS News Now!

  • The stepmother of a Church's Chicken employee killed over the weekend calls him a big teddy bear who was always looking out for his friends and family.   Marion Andrews is appealing to any tipsters to speak out so that justice can be served in the death of 23-year-old Gary Andrews. DeKalb Police confirm Andrews died protecting two of his female co-workers when a couple of masked robbers came into the Church's on Flakes Mill Road Saturday night.  Police haven't released details on how much money was stolen; the gunmen are at large.

  • Terrorists want to go after our salad bars.  So says CBS, which reports that a so-called "credible" threat to slip poisons like cyanide and ricin into hotel and restaurant salad bars and buffets was uncovered earlier this year.  The plot allegedly was hatched by people with ties to the al-Qaeda group which wanted to blow up cargo jets back in October.

  • "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan is recuperating from a kidney transplant and will miss two to three episodes while he's getting better.  No word why the 42-year-old Morgan got the transplant earlier this month, but he was diagnosed with diabetes back in 1996 and says he didn't take it seriously until he got sick his first season on "30 Rock"--and almost had to have a foot amputated.

Morgan Spokeswoman Nicole Chabot says the actor is "doing well" and expects to get back to work after the holidays. In fact, he was having fun at a Knicks game Friday night as New York hosted Miami at Madison Square Garden. He reportedly smiled and hammed it up for the camera a bit when they panned to his seat in the arena. Morgan's "30 Rock" castmate, Grizz Chapman, also got a new kidney earlier this year.

  • The check will not be in the mail--not if it's Social Security.  Starting May 1, the agency is going paperless.  New recipients of Social Security will be the first ones to switch to electronic payments.  Those already getting checks have until March of 2013 to make the switch to direct deposit or debit cards.  Phasing out paper checks will save the government a billion dollars over the next 10 years.

  • The  Colorado man who was selling an e-book on Amazon.com which appeared to be a how-to guide for pedophiles is under arrest.  Phillip Greaves is facing charges for mailing Florida undercover detectives a copy of the controversial book--after deputies wrote him requesting one.  He was arrested under that state's obscenity law.

  • A double-murder suspect arrested in Cobb County over the weekend is a federal Customs officer at Hartsfield-Jackson.  Michael Ntiamoah is charged with killing his estranged wife and her new boyfriend.  Neighbors told police Ntiamoah chased his wife down the street as he fired shots at Fatoumata. She died in a neighbor's driveway; Mohamed Zaine was found inside a house.

  • Whole-fat dairy may cut your risk of adult-onset diabetes.  A study out of Boston links a natural fatty acid found in milk, cheese, butter and yogurt to a 60% reduced chance of Type 2 Diabetes.  Those in the study had better insulin levels and less fat around the middle.  Still, researchers say it's no excuse to load up on full-fat dairy products; they say a healthy, well-balanced diet is the better answer.

  • In KISS news about your health:  echinacea won't cure the common cold.  Wisconsin researchers tested cold sufferers in three groups: one group got echinacea, another a placebo, the third nothing at all.  Doctors found that while a few in the echinacea group got better slightly faster than others--the advantage was measured in hours, not days.  They say it was statistically insignificant.  Americans spend some $5 billion a year on cold and cough remedies.  Doctors say nothing really makes a cold go away.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly cloudy, spotty showers and a high in the lower 50s; tonight's lows in the mid- to upper 40s.  Wednesday, clouds move out and sunshine moves in by the afternoon, with a high near 60.
