A 27-year-old Clayton County cop is charged with taking bribes to protect drug deals. Federal prosecutors allege Officer Jonathan Callahan was paid to guard cocaine dealers on at least three separate occasions this month--and also allegedly stole cash and guns from drivers during two traffic stops. Callahan's out on $50,000 bond.
The last U. S. combat troops have left Iraq. It's seven years and five months after the American-led invasion---and nearly two weeks ahead of President Obama's August 31 withdrawal deadline. The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Lewis, Washington, near Seattle, began rolling across the border into Kuwait before dawn this morning with whoops and cheers. About 6,000 combat troops complete their withdrawal next week.
The convoy of heavily-armored American military vehicles, their headlights twinkling in the pre-dawn desert, lumbered past the barbed wire and metal gates on a route that had been carefully planned for several weeks. (Above, a soldier gives a thumbs-up to the last Stryker armored vehicle to leave Iraq.) Some 50,000 remaining troops are moving into an advise-and-assist role through 2011. They will carry weapons to defend themselves, and if asked, will accompany Iraqi troops on missions. Special forces will continue to help Iraqis hunt for terrorists. As of Wednesday, Pentagon statistics say the American death toll in Iraq is at least 4,415.
The governor is getting involved in the CRCT cheating scandal. Governor Perdue is appointing a special investigator--complete with subpoena powers--to probe the happenings at schools in both the city of Atlanta and Dougherty County. He says the districts' own investigations have been "woefully inadequate." He wants the probe completed before he leaves office in January.
Maybe they robbed the bank to pay for better weaves. The FBI is hunting a pair of wig-wearing bank robbers--and both are men. One is rocking a short, curly 'do, and the other a long, flowing wig. The coiffed pair, wearing shorts and work boots, hit two Wachovia branches in the past three weeks in Fulton and DeKalb Counties. Each time, the FBI says, they "violently enter" a bank, one remains in the lobby, while the other vaults over the counter and takes money at gunpoint before they both run off. They were last seen in a silver Lexus. Tipsters should call the Atlanta FBI office at 404-679-9000.
Some folks who didn't want a rob a bank just decided to print their own money. Alpharetta Police are warning business owners about counterfeit cash going around in recent weeks. The forgers wash legit $5 bills and screenprint a $100 image over them. Two people were arrested last week.

Yowch! An eight-year-old boy going headfirst down a wooden slide at a Maryland park got a splinter. A foot-long splinter. In his stomach. Assistant Fire Chief Luke Humerick says he had to use a utility knife to cut the end that was sticking out of his belly; the other end was stuck in the slide and had the child pinned halfway down the slide. The rest was removed at a DC hospital; the boy is recovering at home.
